Problem Description

Your Inovelli dimmer (Blue Series VZM31-SN or Red Series LZW31-SN) causes the connected LED bulbs to flicker when dimmed below 20-30%. The LEDs may also buzz audibly. This happens because the dimmer's output drops below what the LED driver can regulate, especially with cheap LED bulbs or no-neutral installations where bleed current passes through the bulbs.

Set the minimum dim level (Parameter 1 / 9)

Inovelli dimmers use a trailing-edge (ELV) or leading-edge (MLV) dimming method. Most LED bulbs cannot dim below 10-20% without flickering because the current drops below what the LED driver can regulate. On the Red Series (LZW31-SN): Parameter 1 sets the minimum dim level (1-99). On the Blue Series (VZM31-SN): Parameter 9 sets the minimum brightness. Start at 20 and test — lower it gradually until flickering appears, then raise it 2-3 points above that threshold. This prevents the dimmer from going below the bulb's operational range.

Check bulb compatibility

Not all LED bulbs dim well with Inovelli switches. Bulbs with cheap drivers (often under $3/bulb) flicker at low levels because they cannot handle the reduced power cleanly. Inovelli maintains a compatibility list on their support site. Tested compatible bulbs include: Philips LED A19 (2023+ models), Cree Connected, GE Basic, and LIFX. Avoid 'non-dimmable' LED bulbs entirely — they can flicker, buzz, or even be damaged when used with a dimmer. Check the bulb packaging for 'dimmable' marking.

Install a bypass/load capacitor for no-neutral installations

If the Inovelli dimmer is installed without a neutral wire: it draws a small current through the load (bulb) to power itself. With low-wattage LED bulbs (under 15W total on the circuit), this bleed current is enough to cause the LEDs to glow or flicker at low levels or even when 'off.' Install an Inovelli bypass (part number: LZW-AUX, also called Aeotec Bypass) at one of the light fixtures. The bypass provides an alternative path for the bleed current, preventing it from passing through the bulb. Wire it in parallel with the bulb fixture — line to neutral.

Switch the dimming mode

Inovelli dimmers support multiple dimming modes. On the Blue Series: Parameter 258 bit 1 controls the dimming type — leading edge or trailing edge. Most LED bulbs work better with trailing edge dimming. If the dimmer is set to leading edge and your bulbs flicker: switch to trailing edge. In Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA: change the 'AC Power Type' or dimming mode parameter. On the Red Series: Parameter 52 controls the dimming behavior. Reduce the total number of bulbs on the circuit

If the circuit has 6+ LED bulbs: the combined load at low dimming levels can cause oscillation in the dimmer's output — the dimmer cannot regulate such a small amount of power across many bulbs evenly. This causes all bulbs to flicker in sync. Solutions: reduce the number of bulbs, switch to slightly higher-wattage bulbs (e.g., 9W instead of 5W), or replace some LED bulbs with a single incandescent bulb to add a resistive load that stabilizes the circuit. One 40W incandescent mixed with LEDs can eliminate flicker completely.
