Problem Description

Your Inovelli switch LED bar is either too dim to see during the day or blindingly bright at night. The LED bar has separate brightness settings for when the light is ON versus OFF, and notification effects have their own independent brightness level that can override the normal display.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

An Inovelli LED bar that's too dim or too bright just needs its brightness parameters tuned — and the key is that there are two: brightness when the load is on and brightness when it's off. People often adjust one and find the other state still wrong, especially the off-state bar glowing too brightly in a dark bedroom at night.

Set both the LED-bar-brightness-when-on and LED-bar-brightness-when-off parameters to your preference, typically dialing the off-state down for comfortable nighttime levels. Make sure the parameter is actually written to the device by your hub, and note that notification effects use their own brightness level independent of these. Adjusting the correct on/off brightness parameters gives you the LED bar level you want in each state.

Symptoms

  • LED bar too dim
  • LED bar too bright
  • Brightness uncomfortable
  • LED too bright at night
  • Bar barely visible
  • Can't get the right brightness
  • LED washing out
  • Bar brightness wrong

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • LED brightness parameter set too low/high
  • Separate on-state vs off-state brightness not set
  • Notification effect at a different level
  • Firmware default not adjusted
  • Parameter not applied
  • No day/night adjustment
  • Config cached
  • Wrong parameter changed

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Competing LED automations cause unpredictable bar brightness behavior.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Adjust the LED brightness parameters

The VZM31-SN has separate LED bar brightness controls for when the light is ON vs. OFF. Blue Series: Parameter 97 = LED brightness when switch is ON (0-100, where 0=off and 100=max). Parameter 98 = LED brightness when switch is OFF (0-100). If the LED bar is too bright at night when the light is off: lower Parameter 98 to 10-20. If the LED bar is invisible during the day when the light is on: raise Parameter 97 to 80-100. For the Red Series LZW31-SN: Parameter 14 = LED brightness when ON, Parameter 15 = LED brightness when OFF (values 0-10 on Red Series, not 0-100).

2

Use different colors for on/off states

The LED bar color also affects perceived brightness — a yellow or white LED bar appears much brighter than a deep blue one at the same brightness parameter value. If the bar seems too bright: switch to a cooler color (blue/purple, Parameter 95 values 170-212) which appears dimmer. If it seems too dim: use a warm color (orange/yellow, values 21-42) which appears brighter. You can also set different colors for the on and off states using Parameters 95 (on color) and 96 (off color).

3

Set LED bar to off for one state

If you want the LED bar only visible when the light is off (to find the switch in a dark room): set Parameter 97 to 0 (off when light is on) and Parameter 98 to 30-50 (visible when light is off). If you want it visible only when the light is on (to show dim level without a nightlight glow): set Parameter 97 to 50-100 and Parameter 98 to 0. Setting both to 0 disables the LED bar entirely — the switch still functions, it just has no visual indicator.

4

Account for LED brightness in notifications

LED notification effects (pulse, blink, chase) have their own brightness value separate from Parameters 97/98. A notification set to brightness 10 (maximum) overrides the normal bar brightness. If your notifications are blinding: reduce the notification brightness value when sending the effect command. Notifications use a 0-10 scale, where 5 is moderate and 10 is maximum. The notification brightness is set in the effect command itself, not in the parameters — changing Parameter 97/98 does not affect notification brightness.

5

Check for LED hardware defects

If individual LED segments are always dark or always lit regardless of parameter settings: the LED bar may have a hardware defect. Test by setting the bar to full brightness (Parameter 97=100), solid red (Parameter 95=0), and dim the light to 100%. All 7 segments should be uniformly bright red. If one or more segments are dark, flickering, or a different color: contact Inovelli support for a warranty replacement. The LED bar is not user-replaceable — it is soldered to the main PCB.

Quick Solutions

Adjust the LED brightness parameters (on and off states)
Set on-state and off-state brightness separately
Account for notification effects using their own level
Change from the firmware default to your preference
Ensure the parameter is written to the device
Set a lower off-state brightness for night
Re-apply the parameter
Confirm you changed the correct parameter

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Use one centralized LED profile script across all switches.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • LED brightness parameter set too low/high
  • Separate on-state vs off-state brightness not set
  • Notification effect at a different level
  • Firmware default not adjusted
  • Parameter not applied
