Problem Description

Your Inovelli VZM31-SN LED bar does not reflect the actual brightness of the connected light — the bar shows full when the light is at 50%, or the bar does not change when you dim up or down. The LED bar display mode parameter, active notification effects, min/max dim level settings, and the difference between linear dimmer output and perceived brightness all affect the bar's behavior.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

By default the Inovelli VZM31-SN's LED bar fills proportionally to the dim level, but a parameter controls whether it tracks the load level or shows a fixed color — so a bar that doesn't match the dim level usually has that behavior configured to static, or has an active notification overriding it. It's a settings choice, not a fault.

Check the LED bar parameters and set it to track/reflect the dim level (rather than a fixed color or level), and clear any active notification effect that's overriding the normal bar display. Re-apply the parameter through your hub and confirm it took effect. Update firmware. Once the LED bar is configured to follow the load level and nothing is overriding it, it fills to match your dimming.

Symptoms

  • LED bar doesn't match dim level
  • LED not reflecting brightness
  • Bar shows full despite low dim
  • LED level and dim level differ
  • Bar doesn't track dimming
  • LED stuck regardless of level
  • Mismatch between LED and load
  • Bar not following the dimmer

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • LED set to a fixed color/level (not following load)
  • Parameter for 'LED matches level' disabled
  • Notification effect overriding the bar
  • Firmware issue
  • Config not applied
  • LED bar mode set to static
  • Separate LED behavior configured
  • Hub not updating the LED

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Avoid frequent competing LED writes during dim transitions.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check the LED bar display mode parameter

The VZM31-SN LED bar can display in two modes: dim level tracking (bar fills proportionally to brightness — 50% brightness = half the bar lit) or solid color (all LEDs at the same brightness regardless of dim level). Blue Series Parameter 96 controls this behavior. If set to a static mode: the LED bar does not change with dim level. Set it to the dim-level tracking mode (value depends on firmware — check the Inovelli knowledge base for your firmware version). After changing, dim the light to 50% and verify the bar shows approximately half lit.

2

Calibrate LED bar segments to your bulb's dimming curve

The LED bar divides into 7 segments. At 100% brightness, all 7 are lit. At 50%, approximately 3-4 should be lit. But the LED bar maps linearly (50% = half the bar) while many LED bulbs have non-linear dimming curves — a bulb at '50% dimmer output' may only look 30% bright to your eye. The mismatch between the linear LED bar and the non-linear bulb makes it look like the bar does not match the actual light level. This is expected behavior, not a bug. The LED bar shows the dimmer's electrical output percentage, not perceived brightness.

3

Check if a notification effect is overriding the display

An active LED notification effect (pulse, blink, chase) overrides the normal dim-level display. If the bar is showing a solid red pulse instead of tracking the dim level: a notification effect is active. Clear it: in Z-Wave JS set Parameter 16 to 0, or in Zigbee2MQTT set the led_effect to 'off.' Check your automations for any that send LED notifications — one may be firing without you realizing it.

4

Check min/max dim level vs. LED bar range

If the minimum dim level (Parameter 9 on Blue Series) is set to 30 and the maximum (Parameter 10) is set to 80: the LED bar still maps 0-100% across the full 7 segments, but the actual brightness only moves between 30-80%. At 'minimum' (30%), the bar shows about 2 segments. At 'maximum' (80%), the bar shows about 5-6 segments. The bar never fully empties or fully fills because the dim range is restricted. This is correct behavior — the bar reflects the dimmer output, which is clamped by the min/max parameters.

5

Update firmware for LED bar tracking improvements

Blue Series firmware 2.15+ improved LED bar tracking accuracy, especially during dimming transitions. Earlier firmware had a lag where the LED bar updated after the dimmer output changed, creating a visible mismatch during ramp-up and ramp-down. Update firmware via OTA in Zigbee2MQTT (device > OTA tab). After updating, test by slowly dimming the light — the LED bar should follow the brightness smoothly without jumping or lagging.

Quick Solutions

Enable the LED-bar-matches-dim-level behavior (parameter)
Set the LED to follow the load level
Clear any active notification overriding the bar
Update firmware
Re-apply the parameter
Change the LED bar mode from static to level-tracking
Configure the LED to track the dimmer
Confirm the hub updates the LED

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Indicator UX improves when dim transitions and reporting are consistent.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • LED set to a fixed color/level (not following load)
  • Parameter for 'LED matches level' disabled
  • Notification effect overriding the bar
  • Firmware issue
  • Config not applied
