Problem Description

Your Ring Alarm Base Station has gone offline and will not reconnect to the internet. The alarm system cannot be armed or disarmed from the app and sensor status is unknown. The base station LED may show a red or flashing light indicating connection failure. This affects your entire Ring Alarm security system since all sensors communicate through the base station.

Symptoms

  • Base station LED flashing red or solid red
  • Ring app shows base station offline status
  • Cannot arm or disarm alarm from Ring app
  • Sensors show unknown or offline status in app
  • Cellular backup indicator not active
  • Keypad displays base station communication error

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Ethernet cable disconnected or damaged at router
  • Internet outage affecting home network connection
  • Router firmware update changed network configuration
  • Base station placed too far from router
  • Power adapter loose or outlet lost power
  • Base station firmware update failed mid-process

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

A factory reset erases all sensor pairings and alarm settings. You will need to re-add every sensor through the Ring app which can take 15 to 30 minutes depending on system size.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Physical Connections and Power

Verify the base station power adapter is firmly plugged into a working outlet and the LED on the base station is illuminated. If using ethernet check that the cable is securely connected at both the base station and router ends. Try a different ethernet cable if available. A loose power connection is the most overlooked cause of base station offline issues and takes seconds to verify.

2

Verify Home Internet Connection

Check if other devices in your home can access the internet. Try loading a website on your phone while connected to the same WiFi network. If nothing else can connect either the issue is your internet service not the Ring base station. Contact your internet provider if the entire network is down. The Ring base station requires a stable internet connection to communicate with Ring servers.

3

Power Cycle Router and Base Station

Unplug your router and wait 60 seconds. Plug the router back in and wait 2 to 3 minutes for it to fully boot and establish an internet connection. Then unplug the Ring base station power adapter and wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in and wait 3 to 5 minutes for it to fully reconnect. The base station must boot after the router to find the network properly.

4

Switch Between Ethernet and WiFi

If the base station is connected via ethernet and still offline try disconnecting the ethernet cable and connecting via WiFi through the Ring app setup process. Conversely if using WiFi try plugging in an ethernet cable directly to the router. This helps determine if the issue is with a specific connection type. Ethernet is always more reliable for the base station than WiFi.

5

Factory Reset Base Station

If nothing else works press and hold the small reset button on the back of the base station using a paperclip for 10 seconds. The LED will flash then turn off. Wait 2 minutes then set up the base station again through the Ring app. Your alarm sensors and settings will need to be reconfigured but your Ring account and subscription remain intact. This should only be done as a last resort.

Quick Solutions

Check and reseat ethernet cable connections at both ends
Verify internet is working on other devices
Restart router and base station in correct order
Move base station closer to router if using WiFi
Try different power outlet and check adapter
Factory reset base station as last resort

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.

Pro Tip

Use ethernet instead of WiFi for the base station whenever possible. It provides a much more stable connection and eliminates most offline issues caused by WiFi interference.

Real-World Insight

Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Ethernet cable disconnected or damaged at router
  • Internet outage affecting home network connection
  • Router firmware update changed network configuration
  • Base station placed too far from router
  • Power adapter loose or outlet lost power
