- Magnet shifted or fell too far from sensor
- Door frame warped from seasonal temperature changes
- Sensor battery low causing erratic readings
Problem Description
Your Ring alarm contact sensor keeps showing a door or window as open when it is clearly closed. This prevents you from arming the system because Ring requires all entry points to show closed before arming in Away mode. You know the door is shut but the app says it is open and you cannot set your alarm when you leave home. The cause is almost always the magnet being too far from the sensor or the sensor battery being low enough to give false readings.
Symptoms
- App shows door open when it is physically closed
- Cannot arm Ring alarm because sensor shows open
- Sensor worked for months then started showing open randomly
- Sensor shows open only in cold weather
- Multiple open close alerts when door has not moved
- Sensor shows open after replacing battery
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Magnet shifted or fell too far from sensor
- Door frame warped from seasonal temperature changes
- Sensor battery low causing erratic readings
- Magnet installed on wrong side or orientation
- Sensor or magnet adhesive failed and position shifted
- Metal door frame interfering with magnetic field
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
If you cannot get the sensor to show closed and you need to arm the system you can bypass the sensor in the Ring app when arming. But a bypassed sensor provides no protection for that entry point. Fix the sensor as soon as possible rather than leaving it bypassed permanently.

Step-by-Step Solution
Inspect sensor-magnet alignment and gap distance
Verify the magnet is aligned with the sensor mark and within Ring's specified gap, because slight misalignment is a common cause of false open status.
Check mounting surface movement and play
Confirm door/frame movement does not separate the pair during closure, since shifting surfaces can cause intermittent open reports even when the door is shut.
Replace sensor battery and refresh status
Install a fresh battery and allow status to republish in app, because low battery can produce delayed or inaccurate contact state updates.
Re-pair sensor if stale state persists
Remove and re-add the sensor to the base station when state remains stuck, because pairing corruption can preserve incorrect status telemetry.
Run repeated open-close test with live event checks
Cycle the door multiple times while watching event history to confirm state transitions are now reliable before considering hardware replacement.

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
When repositioning test the sensor by slowly closing the door and watching the app. The moment the app switches from open to closed is where the magnet field is strong enough. Mark that position and mount permanently. **Product Intelligence:** - CR2032 battery (3yr life) - Cold temps reduce battery - Weak signal = faster drain
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
