- Motion detector placement too high or angled incorrectly
- Sensor set to ignore motion when system is in Home mode
- PIR sensor blocked by furniture shelf or object in front
Problem Description
Your Ring Alarm motion detector does not trigger when someone walks through the room. The alarm stays in Armed mode but motion events never appear in the timeline. Other sensors like contact sensors work fine but the motion detector seems completely inactive.
Symptoms
- No motion events in the Ring app timeline from this sensor
- Alarm does not trigger in Away mode when walking past sensor
- Sensor shows online in device list but never detects motion
- LED on motion detector does not flash when motion occurs
- Motion detector worked previously but stopped detecting
- Test mode shows no response when walking in front of sensor
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Motion detector placement too high or angled incorrectly
- Sensor set to ignore motion when system is in Home mode
- PIR sensor blocked by furniture shelf or object in front
- Dead or low battery preventing sensor from transmitting
- Sensor firmware outdated and needs update through base station
- Heat source nearby like a vent interfering with PIR detection
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not mount the Ring motion detector above a heating vent or radiator. Constant warm air flow triggers false readings and can eventually cause the sensor to ignore real motion entirely.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check Sensor Mode Settings
In the Ring app go to Devices then your motion detector then tap the gear icon. Check Sensor Settings and verify it is set to detect motion in both Home and Away modes. By default many Ring motion detectors are only active in Away mode. If you are testing while in Home mode the sensor intentionally ignores motion.
Verify Placement and Clear Obstructions
The Ring motion detector uses passive infrared to detect body heat crossing its field of view. Mount it 7 feet high in a corner pointing toward the center of the room. Do not mount above a heat register or in direct sunlight as heat interferes with PIR. Ensure nothing blocks the sensor window like a shelf plant or picture frame within 3 feet.
Check Battery Level
In the Ring app go to the motion detector and check battery percentage. Below 15 percent the sensor may stop transmitting motion events to conserve remaining power. Replace the CR123A lithium battery. After replacing check that the sensor shows online in device list. A fresh battery should last 3 to 5 years under normal use.

$16.18Run Walk Test
Set your Ring Alarm to Test Mode in the app which allows testing without triggering the siren. Walk slowly across the sensor field of view at about 10 feet distance. The sensor LED should flash once when it detects motion. If no flash the sensor may be defective. Walk perpendicular to the sensor not directly toward it as PIR sensors detect cross-motion better than approach motion.
Remove and Re-Add Sensor
If the sensor still does not trigger remove it from the Ring app by going to Devices then the sensor then Remove Device. Pull the battery out for 30 seconds. Reinsert the battery and add the sensor fresh through the Ring app setup process. This re-establishes the Z-Wave connection to the base station and clears any firmware communication issues.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.
Place motion detectors so people walk across their field of view not directly toward them. PIR sensors detect lateral movement across the detection cone much better than approach movement. **Product Intelligence:** - CR-123A battery - Pet immunity up to 50lbs at 7ft mount - 30ft range, 120° FOV
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Motion detector placement too high or angled incorrectly
- Sensor set to ignore motion
- PIR sensor blocked by furniture shelf or object in
- Dead or low battery preventing sensor from transmitting
- Sensor firmware outdated and needs update through base station
