- Range Extender placed too far from the Base Station
- Z-Wave network interference from other smart home devices
- Power outage corrupted the Z-Wave pairing with Base Station
Problem Description
Your Ring Alarm Range Extender shows a red or amber LED and will not connect to the Ring Alarm Base Station. The Ring app may show it as offline or it may not appear in your device list after trying to add it. Sensors that relied on the Range Extender are now showing offline or tampered. This commonly happens when the Extender is too far from the Base Station when there is Z-Wave interference or after a power outage disrupted pairing.
Symptoms
- Range Extender LED shows solid red or flashing amber
- Ring app shows Range Extender as offline or unavailable
- Sensors far from Base Station went offline after Extender failed
- Range Extender not appearing in device list during setup
- Extender was working but went offline after power outage
- Multiple sensors showing tampered or communication error
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Range Extender placed too far from the Base Station
- Z-Wave network interference from other smart home devices
- Power outage corrupted the Z-Wave pairing with Base Station
- Range Extender plugged into power strip or surge protector
- Base Station Z-Wave radio needs network repair or rebuild
- Physical obstruction like metal walls blocking Z-Wave signal
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not factory reset the Base Station to fix a Range Extender issue. Resetting the Base Station removes ALL sensors and devices requiring you to re-pair every component in the system.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Check LED Status and Power Source
Unplug the Range Extender and plug directly into a wall outlet. Do not use a power strip surge protector or extension cord as voltage fluctuations prevent the Z-Wave radio from operating. After plugging in wait 60 seconds. Solid green means connected. Blinking green means trying to connect. Solid red means lost connection to Base Station. If LED does not light try a different outlet to rule out a dead outlet.
Move Extender to Optimal Position
The Range Extender needs to be within Z-Wave range of the Base Station typically 30 to 50 feet through walls. For initial setup place it in the same room as the Base Station. Once connected and showing green in the app you can move it to its permanent location. The ideal spot is roughly halfway between the Base Station and your farthest sensors. Avoid placing behind large metal objects like refrigerators or near microwave ovens as metal blocks Z-Wave signals.
Remove and Re-Add the Device
In the Ring app find the Range Extender under Devices. Tap the gear icon then scroll down and tap Remove Device. Confirm removal. Unplug the Extender and wait 30 seconds. In the app tap the plus icon and select Security then Range Extender. Follow on-screen prompts to plug in and pair fresh. This clears any corrupted Z-Wave pairing data from both the Base Station and Extender.
Run Z-Wave Network Repair
After reconnecting the Extender rebuild the Z-Wave network map. In the Ring app go to Base Station settings and look for Z-Wave under Advanced Settings. Tap Repair Z-Wave Network. This takes 5 to 15 minutes as the Base Station pings every Z-Wave device and maps optimal communication paths. Sensors may briefly show offline during repair. Do not unplug anything during this process. Once complete all sensors should reconnect including those relying on the Extender.
Power Cycle the Base Station
If the Extender still will not connect unplug the Base Station power adapter and remove the backup battery by pressing the release tab. Wait a full 2 minutes to fully reset the Z-Wave radio. Reinsert the battery then plug in the adapter. Wait 5 minutes for full boot and cloud reconnection. The LED ring should turn solid green. Then try adding the Range Extender again. If it still fails the Extender hardware may be defective and needs replacement through Ring support.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Place the Ring Alarm Range Extender at an outlet about 50 to 60 percent of the distance between the Base Station and your farthest sensor. This creates the strongest relay path for Z-Wave signals.
Range tests in open air are useless for predicting real-world Z-Wave performance — a single concrete wall or appliance can cut effective range by more than half.
