- You do not know the keypad menu path
- Fear of a false alarm or dispatch fee
- Uncertain sensor placement after a move
Problem Description
You want to test your SimpliSafe sensors without setting off the siren or calling the monitoring center. SimpliSafe has a Test Mode for exactly this - it suppresses alarms and dispatch and instead announces each sensor as you trigger it, so you can safely check placement, range, and signal.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Test Mode is how you safely check a SimpliSafe system without a siren or a call to dispatch. With the system disarmed, open the keypad Menu, enter your master PIN, and choose Test Mode; then, as you trip each sensor, the base station announces it by name instead of alarming. It is the right way to verify placement and signal after moving the base or a sensor, and to run the monthly check that catches a dead or out-of-range sensor before you need it. Two cautions matter: the system protects nothing while Test Mode is on, so exit when you are done; and Test Mode only checks sensors locally - to confirm a real alarm reaches the monitoring center, put your account on test with SimpliSafe first so you do not summon police by accident.
Symptoms
- You want to test sensors without a real alarm
- You are unsure how to enter Test Mode
- You are worried a test will dispatch police
- You moved a sensor and want to confirm it works
- You want to run a routine monthly test
- You are checking a flaky or offline sensor
- The base station is not announcing a sensor
- You want to verify range after moving the base
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- You do not know the keypad menu path
- Fear of a false alarm or dispatch fee
- Uncertain sensor placement after a move
- A newly added sensor needs verifying
- The base station or a sensor was relocated
- A sensor may have a weak signal or dead battery
- You need the recommended monthly system check
- You want to confirm coverage before arming
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Security and life-safety: while Test Mode is on, the system will not alarm or dispatch and provides no protection, so exit it as soon as you finish. To test that alarms reach the monitoring center, notify SimpliSafe first so a test does not trigger a real emergency response.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Understand what Test Mode does
In Test Mode, tripping a sensor does not sound the siren or call monitoring and dispatch. Instead the base station announces each sensor by name as you activate it, so you can safely check placement, battery, and signal without any emergency response.
Enter Test Mode on the keypad
Make sure the system is disarmed (Off). On the keypad, press Menu and enter your master PIN, scroll to Test Mode, and select it. On some accounts you can also start a test from the SimpliSafe app.
Trigger each sensor one at a time
Open each entry sensor, walk in front of each motion sensor, and press the panic button. The base station should announce each one - for example, Front Door - confirming it is communicating with the base.
Fix a sensor the base does not announce
If the base does not announce a sensor, it is out of range, has a dead battery, or is not paired. Move it closer, replace the battery, or re-add it, then test it again.
Still stuck? Ask Trunetto about this exact issue.
Use it after moving the base or a sensor
Run Test Mode whenever you relocate the base station or a sensor, to confirm everything still reaches the base from its new position before you rely on the system.
Test life-safety sensors carefully
Follow SimpliSafe's guidance to test smoke, CO, and water sensors - for example the test button on the smoke detector. Do not expose them to real smoke or water.
Exit Test Mode when finished
Return to the keypad Menu and turn Test Mode off. The system does not protect you while Test Mode is on, so never leave it enabled after you finish.
Notify monitoring for a full dispatch test
Test Mode only checks sensors locally. To verify that a real alarm reaches the monitoring center, call SimpliSafe or put your account on test first, so a full test does not send police.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Decision point
If the fix does not hold, check the matching replacement before another reset cycle.
This is the most relevant replacement path for this SimpliSafe Security System (Gen 3) guide. Use it only if the steps above failed, the issue returns, or the part cost is too close to replacing the device.

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
