Problem Description

Your Ring camera night vision is not working. When it gets dark the camera either shows a completely black screen, shows an extremely dark image where you cannot see anything, or the infrared LED lights are not turning on. During the day the camera works perfectly and shows a clear picture. At night you get nothing useful. This defeats the purpose of having a security camera because most break-ins and suspicious activity happen at night. The Ring camera has built-in infrared LEDs that illuminate the area with invisible light that the camera sensor can see. When these LEDs do not activate or the night vision mode does not switch on the camera is essentially blind in the dark.

Symptoms

  • Ring camera shows completely black screen at night
  • Night vision image is extremely dark and unusable
  • Infrared LEDs around the camera lens are not glowing
  • Camera works fine during the day but fails at night
  • Night vision turns on but image is washed out or foggy
  • Camera shows color during the day then black when sun sets

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Night vision is manually turned off in the Ring app settings
  • Color Night Vision enabled but not enough ambient light for it to work
  • Camera lens has condensation, spider webs, or dirt blocking the IR LEDs
  • Infrared LEDs reflecting off a nearby wall or surface causing washout
  • Camera firmware is outdated and night vision mode is not switching properly
  • Camera positioned behind glass which blocks infrared light

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Ring cameras with battery power dim the infrared LEDs when the battery is low to conserve power. If your night vision was working then gradually got worse check the battery level. Charge the battery to 100 percent and test night vision again. Below 20 percent battery the camera significantly reduces IR LED brightness.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Night Vision Settings in Ring App

Open the Ring app and tap on the camera. Tap Device Settings then Video Settings then Night Vision. Make sure Night Vision is set to Auto not Off. If it is off the camera will not activate infrared LEDs when it gets dark. If your camera supports Color Night Vision and it is enabled switch it to Auto or Standard first to test. Color Night Vision requires some ambient light like a porch light or street light. If there is zero ambient light Color Night Vision will show a black image because it does not use infrared.

2

Clean the Camera Lens and IR LEDs

The infrared LEDs are the small lights arranged in a ring or row around the camera lens. If they are blocked by dirt, dust, spider webs, or condensation the night vision will be severely degraded. Use a soft dry microfiber cloth to clean the entire front face of the camera. For spider webs apply a small amount of anti-spider spray around the camera housing but not on the lens. Condensation inside the lens cover indicates a seal issue and may require a replacement camera.

3

Check for IR Reflection

If the camera is mounted close to a wall, eave, or overhang the infrared light can bounce off the surface and flood the camera sensor causing a washed out white or foggy image. This looks like night vision is not working but it is actually working too well in the wrong direction. Move the camera at least 6 inches away from any nearby surfaces. Angle the camera so the IR LEDs point into open space not at a wall. Some cameras have adjustable IR intensity in the settings.

4

Remove Camera From Behind Glass

If your Ring camera is placed inside looking out through a window the glass reflects the infrared light back into the camera. This creates a bright white glare that makes the image useless at night. Infrared night vision does not work through glass. You must mount the camera outside or against the glass with the IR LEDs turned off and rely on external lighting. Ring cameras are designed for outdoor use and are weather resistant.

5

Update Firmware and Restart

Open the Ring app tap the camera then Device Settings then Device Health. Check for any available firmware updates. If an update is available it will install automatically when the camera is online. After the update or if no update is available restart the camera by toggling the power. For wired cameras turn off the breaker for 10 seconds then back on. For battery cameras remove the battery for 10 seconds then reinsert. After restart check night vision again.

Quick Solutions

Enable night vision in the Ring app device settings
Switch from Color Night Vision to standard infrared night vision
Clean the camera lens and surrounding IR LED area
Reposition the camera away from reflective surfaces
Update the Ring app and camera firmware
Move the camera outside the window if it is behind glass

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.

Pro Tip

If you need night vision through a window because outdoor mounting is not possible turn off the infrared LEDs in the Ring app settings and add an external infrared illuminator light outside. These are inexpensive flood-style IR lights that illuminate the area from outside the window so the camera can see without reflection. You can find them for around 15 to 25 dollars.

Real-World Insight

A black screen after connecting is almost always the IR cut filter stuck mid-position — a power cycle resets the mechanical component in under a minute.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Night vision is manually turned off in the Ring
  • Color Night Vision enabled but not enough ambient light
  • Camera lens has condensation, spider webs, or dirt
  • Infrared LEDs reflecting off a nearby wall or surface
  • Camera firmware is outdated and night vision mode is
