- Motion detection disabled in app
- Motion sensitivity set too low
- Motion zones excluding the area
Problem Description
Your Ring Floodlight Cam lights activate correctly on motion but the camera does not record clips or send motion notifications. Or the camera records nothing at all — no lights, no clips, no alerts. Motion detection on the Ring Floodlight Cam is controlled by several independent toggles that can each disable recording independently.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Motion detection failing is usually disabled detection, sensitivity set too low, or motion zones that exclude where movement happens — plus, for recorded alerts, an active Ring Protect subscription is required to save clips.
Start by confirming motion detection is on and sensitivity is adequate, then check the motion zones actually cover the target area. If you get live view but no recordings, it's the subscription — Protect is what stores motion clips. Mounting height and angle affect PIR detection too.
Symptoms
- No motion alerts or recordings
- People walk by without triggering
- Lights turn on but no video recorded
- Motion worked before but stopped
- Motion zones appear correct
- Other Ring devices detect motion fine
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Motion detection disabled in app
- Motion sensitivity set too low
- Motion zones excluding the area
- Motion schedule blocking detection
- People Only mode missing non-human motion
- Camera firmware needs update
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not point motion zones at busy streets or sidewalks. You will get hundreds of recordings daily and miss important events in the noise.
Step-by-Step Solution
Confirm Motion Detection Master Toggle Is On
In the Ring app tap the Floodlight Cam, then tap Motion Settings. Verify the Motion Detection toggle at the top is turned on. This single toggle disables all motion detection including recording and notifications when switched off — it can be accidentally toggled during other settings adjustments. Re-enable it and walk through the camera's field of view to confirm detection triggers within 30 seconds.
Increase Motion Sensitivity
In Motion Settings drag the Motion Sensitivity slider toward the right. At low sensitivity settings the Floodlight Cam only triggers on fast movement very close to the camera — a person walking at normal pace from 15 feet away may not register. Set sensitivity to High as a test and confirm whether detection becomes reliable. If you then receive too many false alerts from cars or animals, reduce one step at a time.
Review and Expand Motion Zones
Tap Motion Zones and check that the blue detection area covers the paths and entry points you expect the camera to monitor. Any movement outside the defined blue zones is completely ignored regardless of sensitivity settings. Redraw the zones to include walkways, driveways, and approach paths. Changes to motion zones take effect immediately without requiring a restart.
Remove Motion Schedule Restrictions
Tap Motion Schedule in the Ring app and check whether a schedule has been set. A configured schedule disables motion detection entirely during the scheduled off hours. If your missed events correspond to specific time windows, a schedule is likely the cause. Remove the schedule or adjust the off hours to cover only the periods when detection is genuinely not needed.
Disable People Only Mode for Full Motion Coverage
Ring's People Only Mode uses computer vision to filter out motion from cars, animals, and environmental movement. When enabled, only human shapes trigger recording — a delivery van or your dog will not register. If you want all motion detected, go to Motion Settings and disable People Only Mode. This is a common source of missed events for users who want full coverage.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.
Set up Motion Alerts separately from Motion Recording. You can record all motion but only get alerts for people to reduce notification fatigue.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
