- Ring Protect subscription expired disabling Smart Alerts feature
- Camera angle or mounting height too high for person silhouette detection
- Camera field of view partially blocked by furniture or glass
Problem Description
Your Ring Indoor Cam 2nd Gen is recording motion events but not identifying people in those clips. The camera detects general motion but never sends Person Detected alerts and the Smart Alerts feature does not distinguish people from other motion sources. Person detection on Ring cameras requires a Ring Protect subscription and the camera must have a clear unobstructed view of the area to identify human silhouettes.
Symptoms
- Camera records motion but never sends a Person Detected alert
- Smart Alerts setting shows People Only but no alerts arrive
- Ring app shows All Motion events but none are tagged as Person
- Person detection worked before then stopped after an app update
- Camera set to People Only motion alerts but misses actual people
- Notification shows motion detected but Smart Alert label is missing
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Ring Protect subscription expired disabling Smart Alerts feature
- Camera angle or mounting height too high for person silhouette detection
- Camera field of view partially blocked by furniture or glass
- Motion sensitivity set too low causing person events to be skipped
- Smart Alerts feature not enabled in camera motion settings
- Camera firmware not updated to version supporting 2nd gen detection
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not use Person Only alerts for the sole security coverage of a room. Generic motion recording should also be kept active so all events are captured regardless of detection classification.

Step-by-Step Solution
Verify Ring Protect Subscription
Person detection and Smart Alerts on Ring Indoor Cam require an active Ring Protect plan. Open the Ring app and go to Account then Ring Protect Plan. Verify the plan status shows Active and has not expired. Without a Protect plan the camera records video but all motion events are tagged as Generic Motion without any person classification regardless of camera settings.
Enable Smart Alerts in Motion Settings
Go to the Ring app, tap your Indoor Cam, go to Motion Settings then Smart Alerts. Ensure Smart Alerts is toggled on and that People is selected as the motion type. Also check the Alert Types setting and confirm Person is enabled. If Smart Alerts shows as Off no person detection processing occurs even with an active subscription.
Adjust Camera Mounting Height and Angle
Ring person detection works best when the camera is mounted at 2 to 3 metres height angled down at approximately 30 degrees. At this height a person walking into the frame appears as a full upright silhouette which the AI model classifies as human. Cameras mounted too high show only the tops of heads which the model often cannot classify. Cameras at floor level show feet only which also fail person classification.

Cameras behind glass, near mirrors, or positioned where sunlight creates reflections produce image artifacts that confuse person detection. Ensure the camera lens is clean and free of smudges. Avoid pointing the camera directly at windows or glass doors where reflections appear as motion. The person detection AI requires a clear contrast between the subject and the background to correctly identify a human silhouette.
Increase Motion Sensitivity
Go to Ring app then the camera then Motion Settings then Motion Sensitivity. If set to low or medium the camera may not register slower-moving people who enter the frame carefully. Increase sensitivity to high and test by walking through the detection zone at normal pace. Review the captured clips in the Ring app to confirm they now show a Person label rather than Motion only.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.
Position the Ring Indoor Cam so people walk across the frame rather than directly toward the camera. Cross-frame movement is easier for person detection AI to classify than approach movement.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
