Problem Description

You are setting up the SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Cam for indoor monitoring with 360-degree horizontal rotation. Place the camera on a flat surface (shelf, desk, or tabletop) and plug it in via the included USB-C cable. The camera needs a power outlet nearby — it does not have a battery. This guide covers placement, power connection, WiFi pairing, and configuring pan/tilt controls and motion tracking.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Cam is a 2.4GHz WiFi camera set up by scanning a QR code the app shows on your phone — so the two usual snags are trying to join a 5GHz-only network and the camera not reading the QR code because the phone is too close or too far. Local recording uses a microSD card that has to be compatible and formatted.

Put the camera in setup mode, connect it to a 2.4GHz network with the correct password, and hold the QR code steady at the distance the app suggests until the camera chimes. Insert a supported microSD card for recording, place the camera where WiFi is strong, and install any firmware update. Once online, the pan/tilt controls and any motion tracking work from the app.

Symptoms

  • Setting up the Pan/Tilt Cam
  • Won't connect to WiFi
  • QR code not scanning
  • App can't find the camera
  • microSD not recognized
  • Pan/tilt not working
  • Offline after setup
  • Placement questions

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Connecting to 5GHz instead of 2.4GHz WiFi
  • QR code not clear or at the wrong distance
  • Weak WiFi where the camera sits
  • Wrong WiFi password
  • microSD not formatted/incompatible
  • Camera not in setup mode
  • Firmware update pending
  • Router blocking the device

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Place and power the Pan/Tilt Cam

Place the SwitchBot Pan/Tilt Cam on a flat surface (shelf, table, counter) or mount it on the ceiling using the included mount. The camera rotates 360 degrees horizontally and 115 degrees vertically, so it covers an entire room from one position. Plug in the USB-C power cable — the camera does not have a battery and must stay plugged in. Place it centrally in the room for maximum pan/tilt coverage.

2

Connect to WiFi through the SwitchBot app

In the SwitchBot app, tap + > Add Device > Pan/Tilt Cam. The app guides you through WiFi setup. The camera supports 2.4GHz WiFi only. Hold your phone near the camera — it scans a QR code from the app to receive WiFi credentials. After connecting, the camera appears in the app with a live view. Pan and tilt controls appear as directional arrows on the live view screen.

3

Set up motion tracking

In the camera settings, enable Motion Tracking. When motion is detected, the camera physically rotates to follow the moving object across the room. The tracking is AI-powered and works best for people — it may lose track of small pets or fast-moving objects. Set tracking sensitivity: High follows any movement, Low follows only significant movement (a person walking). The camera returns to its home position after tracking ends (configurable).

4

Configure patrol points

In the camera settings, go to Patrol. Set multiple patrol points — positions the camera cycles through on a timer. Example: point 1 covers the front door, point 2 covers the living room window, point 3 covers the hallway. The camera rotates between these positions at an interval you choose (every 30 seconds, 1 minute, or 5 minutes). Patrol provides full room coverage without needing multiple cameras.

5

Set up privacy mode and notifications

Enable Privacy Mode to physically rotate the camera lens downward into the body when you are home. In the SwitchBot app, toggle Privacy Mode manually or automate it based on your presence (using geofencing or SwitchBot Hub detection). Set motion detection notifications to alert you when the camera detects movement while you are away. Insert a microSD card (up to 256GB) for local recording — footage stays on the card, never uploaded to the cloud unless you enable cloud storage.

Quick Solutions

Connect the camera to a 2.4GHz WiFi network
Hold the QR code steady at the right distance to scan
Place the camera where WiFi is strong
Re-enter the correct WiFi password
Use a compatible, properly formatted microSD
Put the camera in setup/pairing mode
Install any firmware update
Allow the device on the router if blocked

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Set up activity zones to monitor only the areas that matter like your front porch and driveway and exclude the street. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss an actual event at your property.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
