- WiFi signal intermittent causing UDP packet loss in video stream
- Echo Show 8 on congested 2.4GHz band instead of less congested 5GHz
- Router MTU mismatch causing call packets to be fragmented and dropped
Problem Description
Your Amazon Echo Show 8 disconnects video calls after a few minutes even when the Echo Show shows as online and connected to WiFi. Alexa Calling and Drop In video calls may freeze then show a call failed or connection lost message. Echo Show video calls use the Alexa calling infrastructure over WiFi and are sensitive to packet loss and latency even when bandwidth appears adequate.
Symptoms
- Video call drops after 2 to 5 minutes without warning
- Call audio continues briefly then drops when video freezes
- Echo Show shows WiFi connected but calls still drop mid-session
- Drops happen with all contacts not just one specific person
- Calls from the Alexa app to Echo Show work but Echo Show to Echo Show drops
- Issue started after router or ISP change
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- WiFi signal intermittent causing UDP packet loss in video stream
- Echo Show 8 on congested 2.4GHz band instead of less congested 5GHz
- Router MTU mismatch causing call packets to be fragmented and dropped
- Echo Show device firmware bug causing calling service crash
- Alexa calling service outage affecting specific regions
- Echo Show overheating causing WiFi chipset to throttle
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not make critical or professional video calls exclusively through Echo Show 8. Alexa Calling is designed for casual household use and lacks the enterprise-grade quality guarantees of video conferencing services.

Step-by-Step Solution
Switch to 5GHz WiFi Band
Swipe down from the top of Echo Show 8 and tap Settings then WiFi. If your router has a separate 5GHz network listed select it. The 5GHz band has lower congestion and lower latency than 2.4GHz making it significantly better for real-time video call traffic. Video calls are highly sensitive to latency spikes that the 2.4GHz band experiences in dense neighbourhoods. After switching to 5GHz make a test call to confirm stability improvement.
Power Cycle Echo Show and Router
Say Alexa go to sleep then unplug the Echo Show 8 power adapter for 30 seconds. Also restart your router by unplugging its power for 30 seconds. Reconnect the router first and wait for it to fully start. Then reconnect the Echo Show 8. After both devices restart make a test call. Power cycling clears any TCP connection state in the Echo Show calling service that may be causing calls to fail at the network session timeout point.

$9.99Check Echo Show Firmware Version
Swipe down from the top of the Echo Show 8 and go to Settings then Device Options then Check for Software Updates. Install any available update. Amazon regularly releases Echo Show firmware updates that include calling stability fixes. After updating make several test calls of at least 10 minutes duration to verify the drops have stopped. Note the firmware version before and after the update for reference if the issue persists and you need to contact Amazon support.
Check for Alexa Service Disruption
Visit downdetector.com and search for Amazon Alexa to check if other users are reporting calling outages. Alexa Calling uses cloud-based relay servers and regional outages can cause calls to drop for all users in an area regardless of their local network conditions. If a wide outage is confirmed wait for Amazon to restore the service. If no outage is reported the drops are local to your Echo Show or network configuration.
Improve Echo Show 8 Ventilation
The Echo Show 8 generates heat during video processing and WiFi radio operation. Placing it in a tight space or against a wall can cause the device to throttle performance during extended calls. Ensure there is at least 5 centimetres of free space behind and on the sides of the unit. Do not place it in a closed cabinet or under a shelf. After improving ventilation run a 15-minute test call to confirm the drops do not occur when the device has adequate airflow.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.
Use Alexa Drop In for quick check-ins with household members across Echo Show devices. Drop In connects immediately without ringing, which is faster than a standard Alexa call and uses less bandwidth for brief communications.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
