Problem Description

Your SmartThings hub can't add or discover devices during pairing. SmartThings supports Zigbee, Z-Wave, WiFi, and Matter devices, each with a different pairing process. The device must be in pairing mode and compatible with your hub model. This guide covers identifying the device protocol, entering pairing mode, and completing the add device flow.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

SmartThings supports four different device families - Zigbee, Z-Wave, WiFi, and Matter - and each pairs differently, so the first step when a device won't add is knowing which protocol you're dealing with and using the matching flow. A Zigbee sensor needs its reset/pairing sequence, a Z-Wave device needs inclusion mode (and exclusion first if it was paired before), a WiFi device provisions over your 2.4GHz network, and a Matter device needs its setup code and often a Thread border router. Mixing these up - trying to 'scan nearby' for a device that needs a manual reset - is a common reason nothing is discovered.

Two other blockers show up constantly. Range: pairing, especially secure Zigbee/Z-Wave inclusion, wants a strong signal, so add the device close to the hub and move it afterward. And prior ownership: a device still bound to another hub or network won't join until it's factory reset (Zigbee/WiFi) or excluded (Z-Wave). On the software side, a device may need the right Edge driver available to be recognized as more than a generic device, and WiFi devices fail if you try to provision them on a 5GHz or WPA3-only network. Clearing any ghost node left from a failed attempt gives the next try a clean slate.

Symptoms

  • Hub can't find the device during Add Device
  • Pairing starts but never completes
  • Device pairs then immediately drops
  • Device pairs as the wrong type
  • Only pairs when right next to the hub
  • A previously-paired device won't re-add
  • Matter device won't onboard
  • WiFi device won't join during setup

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Device not actually in pairing mode
  • Wrong protocol/process for the device (Zigbee vs Z-Wave vs Matter vs WiFi)
  • Device too far from the hub during pairing
  • Device still joined to a previous network/hub (needs reset/exclusion)
  • No Edge driver available for that specific device model
  • Matter device needs Thread/border-router or a correct setup code
  • WiFi device provisioning on 5GHz or WPA3-only
  • Ghost node or leftover entry blocking a clean add

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

WiFi devices pair through their own apps first, then link to SmartThings.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check if the device uses Zigbee, Z-Wave, WiFi, or Matter

SmartThings supports multiple protocols. The pairing method differs for each. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices pair through the SmartThings hub directly. WiFi devices pair through the SmartThings app over your WiFi network. Matter devices use a QR code scanned in the SmartThings app. Check the hub documentation to confirm the protocol. If you are unsure, the SmartThings app device catalog shows the protocol for each supported device.

2

Bring the device close to the hub for initial pairing

Zigbee and Z-Wave devices should be within 10 feet of the SmartThings hub during initial pairing. The pairing handshake uses low-power signals for security. After successful pairing, move the device to its permanent location. For WiFi devices, make sure the device and your phone are on the same 2.4GHz WiFi network. For Matter devices, scan the Matter QR code on the device or its packaging.

3

Factory reset the device before pairing

If a device was previously paired to another hub, smart home system, or even the same SmartThings hub, it needs to be factory reset before it can pair again. The reset method varies by device — check the manufacturer instructions. Common methods: hold a button for 10-15 seconds, remove and reinsert the battery while holding a button, or cycle power in a specific pattern. After resetting, the device enters pairing mode (usually indicated by a blinking LED).

4

Exclude Z-Wave devices before re-pairing

Z-Wave devices require a formal exclusion from their previous network before they can join a new one. In the SmartThings app, go to Hub Settings > Z-Wave Utilities > Z-Wave Exclusion. Tap Start, then trigger the device pairing button. The hub sends an exclusion command. After exclusion, immediately switch to inclusion mode (Add Device) and pair. Skipping exclusion is the most common reason Z-Wave devices fail to pair — they still think they belong to another network.

5

Check hub firmware and app version

Outdated hub firmware or app versions can cause pairing failures, especially for newer devices. In the SmartThings app, go to Hub Settings and check the firmware version. If an update is available, install it and wait for the hub to reboot. Also update the SmartThings app from the App Store or Play Store. After updating, retry pairing. If you are pairing a brand-new device that was just released, it may require the very latest hub firmware to be recognized.

Quick Solutions

Put the device into its correct pairing mode per its manual
Identify the protocol and use the matching add flow
Pair close to the hub, then relocate the device
Factory reset (Zigbee/WiFi) or exclude (Z-Wave) a previously-paired device
Install/allow the right Edge driver for the device
For Matter, use the setup code and ensure a Thread border router if needed
Provision WiFi devices on 2.4GHz WPA2, not 5GHz/WPA3-only
Remove any ghost node or stale entry, then retry

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If pairing fails after multiple attempts, the device may still be registered to a previous account — factory-reset it before trying to add it to a new one.

Pro Tip

Zigbee and Z-Wave devices create mesh networks - more devices = better coverage.

Real-World Insight

Pairing failures almost always come down to distance during the initial handshake — manufacturers seriously understate how close you actually need to be.
