- Rain Delay active
- Schedule paused
- Weather skip preventing run
Problem Description
If schedules do not run, the controller may be in Rain Delay or offline. This guide checks schedule settings, delays, and connectivity to restore automation.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
If schedules do not run, the controller may be in Rain Delay or offline. This guide checks schedule settings, delays, and connectivity to restore automation. In day-to-day use, this usually looks like Zones do not start on schedule; Manual run works; Rain Delay enabled.
Most cases trace back to Rain Delay active; Schedule paused; Weather skip preventing run. The fix works best when you go step by step instead of changing multiple settings at once.
A practical order for this issue is: Check Rain Delay -> Resume Schedule -> Review Weather Skip -> Confirm Time Zone. After each step, test the exact behavior that was failing so you can confirm what actually solved it.
Symptoms
- Zones do not start on schedule
- Manual run works
- Rain Delay enabled
- Controller online
- Weather skip on
- Schedule shows paused
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Rain Delay active
- Schedule paused
- Weather skip preventing run
- Controller offline at run time
- Time zone incorrect
- Smart schedule disabled
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not disable Weather Skip unless you understand local watering restrictions.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Check Rain Delay Status
Open the Rachio app and look for a rain delay indicator on the home screen. A blue rain delay banner shows the remaining delay time. Tap it to shorten or cancel the delay. Rain Delay pauses all scheduled runs until the timer expires. The Rachio 3 also auto-activates rain delay based on local weather station data if Weather Intelligence Plus is enabled.
Verify the Schedule is Active
In the Rachio app, go to Schedules and confirm the schedule is not paused (grayed out). Tap the schedule name and check the run days and start time. Fixed schedules show specific days; Flex Daily shows estimated next run days based on soil moisture calculations. If you recently edited the schedule, re-save it to make sure the controller received the updated settings.
Review Weather Intelligence Skip Settings
Rachio's Weather Intelligence can skip watering based on rain, wind, freeze, or soil saturation forecasts. Go to the Rachio app > More > Weather Intelligence and review each skip type. Climate Skip, Rain Skip, and Freeze Skip can all cancel runs. Check the schedule history in the app — it logs why each run was skipped (e.g., Rain Skip, Climate Skip) so you can identify which feature is canceling runs.
Verify Controller Time Zone
In the Rachio app, go to More > Controller Settings > Time Zone. If the time zone is wrong, schedules run at the wrong local time — or appear to not run at all if the offset puts the start time in the past. The controller uses internet time, not a local clock, so the time zone must match your actual location for schedules to run at the correct hour.
Run a Manual Quick Run
In the Rachio app, go to Zones and tap the play icon next to any zone to start a manual 3-minute run. Walk outside and confirm water flows from the sprinkler heads on that zone. If water flows during manual runs but not during scheduled runs, the issue is in the schedule settings or weather skips, not the hardware. If no water flows, check the controller wiring connections and zone valve.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Schedules that skip randomly are usually a daylight-saving holdover — delete and recreate the schedule to clear the corrupted entry.
Use fixed schedules if you need consistent watering during extreme heat.
Thermostat issues that keep returning are often caused by stale backup-battery memory holding old settings across power cycles without the user realising.
- Rain Delay active
- Schedule paused
- Weather skip preventing run
- Controller offline at run time
- Time zone incorrect
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
