- Zigbee bulbs default to power-on state as a safety recovery behavior
- DIRIGERA hub power-on behavior setting not configured
- Bulb firmware does not support startup behavior configuration
Problem Description
Your IKEA TRADFRI smart bulbs automatically turn on at full brightness whenever power is restored after an outage, even if they were turned off before the outage. This happens in the middle of the night during brief power flickers and is a common frustration with Zigbee smart bulbs that default to their power-on state when electricity is restored.
Symptoms
- All IKEA smart bulbs turn on at full brightness after any power outage
- Bulbs come on during brief power flickers in the middle of the night
- Lights turn on after tripping a circuit breaker and resetting it
- Bulbs default to warm white at 100 percent brightness after power loss
- Scheduled off state is ignored when power is restored
- Only smart bulbs turn on while regular bulbs stay off after outage
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Zigbee bulbs default to power-on state as a safety recovery behavior
- DIRIGERA hub power-on behavior setting not configured
- Bulb firmware does not support startup behavior configuration
- Physical light switch was left in on position during outage
- No UPS or surge protector buffering brief power flickers
- Automation or scene triggered by hub reconnection after power restore
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not rapidly toggle the physical switch more than 6 times as this triggers the factory reset sequence on TRADFRI bulbs and will unpair them from your hub.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Check Startup Behavior Setting
Open the IKEA Home Smart app and navigate to the settings for each individual TRADFRI bulb. Look for a setting called Startup Behavior or Power On Behavior. If available, set it to Previous State which tells the bulb to return to whatever brightness and on or off state it was in before power was lost. This feature was added in later firmware versions and may not be available on older first-generation TRADFRI bulbs.
Update All Bulb Firmware
In the IKEA Home Smart app, go to hub settings and check for device firmware updates. TRADFRI bulbs receive firmware updates over-the-air through the DIRIGERA hub. The startup behavior feature requires a minimum firmware version on the bulbs themselves. Update all bulbs and wait for the updates to complete, which can take several hours as Zigbee OTA updates are slow and sequential.
Create a Power Restore Automation
If the startup behavior setting is not available for your bulbs, create a workaround automation. In the IKEA Home Smart app, set up a time-based automation that turns off all bedroom and hallway lights between 10 PM and 7 AM. While this does not prevent the momentary flash during a power outage, the lights will be turned back off within the automation check interval.
Consider Hardware Solutions
For critical areas like bedrooms where nighttime illumination from power flickers is unacceptable, consider replacing smart bulbs with smart switches like the IKEA TRADFRI shortcut button combined with a smart plug. Smart plugs control power to standard bulbs and can be configured to remain off after power restore. Alternatively, a small UPS on the DIRIGERA hub prevents the hub from losing power during brief outages.
Test the Configuration
After configuring startup behavior or creating automations, test by turning off the bulbs through the app, then flipping the physical light switch off and on to simulate a power outage. If the bulb comes back on at full brightness, the startup behavior setting did not take effect and you may need to update the bulb firmware or use the automation workaround approach instead.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.
Newer IKEA smart bulbs with Matter support generally handle power restore behavior better than older first-generation TRADFRI bulbs. Consider upgrading older bulbs.
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
