Problem Description

Your Level Bolt smart lock is not installing correctly or not working after installation. The Level Bolt replaces the interior deadbolt assembly on your existing lock. Installation problems occur when the deadbolt is not compatible (multi-point locks, mortise locks), the bolt body is inserted at the wrong angle, or the tailpiece adapter does not engage properly.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The Level Bolt replaces just the interior deadbolt assembly of your existing lock, keeping your handles and trim - its whole appeal is being invisible. That design means compatibility and mechanical fit matter more than anything: it works with a standard single-cylinder deadbolt on a door with a 2-1/8 inch bore and a standard backset, but it will not work with multi-point locks or mortise locks, so an install that 'won't fit' is often an incompatible lock rather than a technique problem. The tailpiece adapter is the critical link that transfers the motor's motion to your existing bolt, so it has to be the right one and fully seated, and the bolt body has to go in at the correct angle the app shows.

Once it's physically in, most 'won't work after install' issues are the same ones that plague any deadbolt: binding. If the strike plate is misaligned or the door has shifted, the bolt drags, which makes the lock strain, fail to calibrate, and drain its CR2 battery quickly as the motor fights the resistance. The fix is mechanical - align the strike so the bolt glides in by hand, correct door/frame alignment, and back off any over-tightened trim screws that pinch the mechanism. Use a fresh CR2 lithium battery seated correctly, since Level's motor needs full voltage to throw a bolt smoothly. Get the fit and alignment right and calibration and app control follow easily.

Symptoms

  • Bolt won't install / doesn't fit the deadbolt
  • Lock won't calibrate after install
  • Deadbolt binds or won't throw smoothly
  • Bolt inserted but won't engage the throw
  • Tailpiece adapter won't seat
  • Lock drains its CR2 battery fast
  • Works by key but not from the app
  • Grinding/straining when locking

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Incompatible deadbolt (multi-point or mortise lock)
  • Bolt body inserted at the wrong angle
  • Tailpiece adapter not engaging properly
  • Non-standard backset or bore
  • Strike plate misaligned so the bolt binds
  • Weak/incorrectly seated CR2 battery
  • Worn trim over-tightened, binding the mechanism
  • Door/frame out of alignment adding friction

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Verify deadbolt compatibility

The Level Bolt replaces the interior assembly of your existing deadbolt — you keep your current exterior hardware (keys, handle, everything visible from outside). It fits single-cylinder deadbolts with a standard tailpiece. Check the Level compatibility page for your exact deadbolt brand and model. It does not fit mortise locks, multi-point locks, or Jimmy-proof deadbolts. The door thickness must be between 1-3/8" and 2" for the bolt to fit.

2

Remove the interior deadbolt assembly

From inside the door, remove the two mounting screws on the interior deadbolt plate. Pull off the interior thumb turn and plate. Leave the exterior side completely untouched — the Level Bolt works with your existing exterior hardware. The tailpiece (the metal bar connecting interior to exterior) stays in place. If the tailpiece falls out, slide it back through the lock body before installing the Level Bolt.

3

Install the Level Bolt motor assembly

Slide the Level Bolt onto the tailpiece. The motor housing sits where the old thumb turn was. Align the screw holes and use the included screws to secure it. Do not overtighten — the screws should be snug but not stripped. The Level Bolt is powered by a CR2 battery (included). Insert the battery into the slot on the assembly. The lock chirps or the LED blinks to confirm power.

4

Calibrate the lock positions

In the Level app, add the lock and follow the calibration prompts. The app asks you to manually lock and unlock the deadbolt so the motor learns the full range of travel. Turn the deadbolt to the locked position and tap 'Set Locked.' Turn it to unlocked and tap 'Set Unlocked.' This calibration is critical — if skipped or done incorrectly, the motor may not fully extend or retract the bolt, leaving the door unsecured or jammed.

5

Fix installation issues

If the motor stalls or makes a grinding noise: the bolt is binding against the strike plate. Check that the door is properly aligned and the bolt extends smoothly by hand. If the bolt is tight, adjust the strike plate with a chisel or file to allow smoother travel. The Level Bolt motor has limited torque by design (to preserve battery life) and cannot force a misaligned bolt. If the lock chirps repeatedly after installation, the battery contacts may not be seated properly — remove and reinsert the CR2 battery.

Quick Solutions

Confirm a standard single-cylinder deadbolt (not multi-point/mortise)
Insert the bolt body at the correct angle per the app
Use the supplied tailpiece adapter and seat it fully
Verify backset and a 2-1/8 inch bore
Align the strike plate so the bolt slides in freely
Install a fresh CR2 lithium battery, seated correctly
Back off over-tightened trim screws
Fix door/frame alignment so the bolt moves without force

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Incompatible deadbolt (multi-point or mortise lock)
  • Bolt body inserted at the wrong angle
  • Tailpiece adapter not engaging properly
  • Non-standard backset or bore
  • Strike plate misaligned so the bolt binds
