Problem Description

Your Level Lock does not respond to lock/unlock commands from the Level Home app. Tapping the lock or unlock button in the app shows a loading spinner but nothing happens. The lock still works with the physical key. This is typically a Bluetooth connection issue between your phone and the lock.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Level locks are Bluetooth devices, so when the app shows a spinner and nothing happens while the physical key still works, the issue is almost always the Bluetooth link between your phone and the lock - not the lock hardware. The most common cause is simply range: Bluetooth is short-range, so if you're not near the door the app can't reach the lock. The tell is that commands work when you're standing at the door but not from across the house or away from home. For that, remember Level locks have no built-in remote access - a Level Connect bridge is what adds WiFi so you can control the lock when you're not in Bluetooth range.

When you are in range and it still won't respond, work the connection basics. Bluetooth has to be on with the Level app granted permission, and a weak CR2 battery degrades the lock's radio (and its ability to move the bolt), so a fresh lithium CR2 often fixes flaky app control. Level locks generally hold one active Bluetooth connection, so another household phone already linked can block yours - disconnect it. Keep the app and firmware updated, reduce interference from other Bluetooth/2.4GHz gear near the door, and force-close/reopen the app to clear a stuck session. With a strong battery and a clean Bluetooth link, app control is reliable at the door.

Symptoms

  • Lock/unlock button spins but nothing happens
  • App shows a loading spinner then times out
  • Lock still works with the physical key
  • App can't connect to the lock
  • Commands work only when standing at the door
  • App loses the lock after a while
  • Slow response from the app
  • Lock intermittently unreachable in the app

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Phone out of Bluetooth range of the lock
  • Bluetooth off or app lacks Bluetooth permission
  • Weak CR2 battery affecting the radio
  • Another phone holding the Bluetooth connection
  • No Level Connect bridge, so no remote control
  • App or lock firmware out of date
  • Bluetooth interference near the door
  • App session/cache glitch

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always keep a physical key - Level has no keypad or alternative entry if battery dies outside.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Force close and reopen the Level app

If the Level app is unresponsive, not loading device status, or stuck on a loading screen: force close it. On iPhone: swipe up from the bottom and swipe the Level app away. On Android: open Recent Apps and swipe Level away. Reopen the app. The app reconnects to the lock via Bluetooth. This clears cached connection states that cause the app to lose sync with the lock.

2

Check Bluetooth is enabled on your phone

The Level Lock communicates via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). On iPhone: go to Settings > Bluetooth > make sure it is on. Also check Settings > Privacy > Bluetooth > Level — make sure the Level app has Bluetooth permission. On Android: Settings > Connected Devices > Bluetooth > On. If you recently updated your phone OS, Bluetooth permissions sometimes reset — re-enable them for the Level app.

3

Walk within range of the lock

Bluetooth range for the Level Lock is approximately 20-30 feet through walls. If you are out of range, the app shows the lock as unavailable or offline. Walk closer to the door where the lock is installed. The app should detect the lock within 5-10 seconds. If you need remote access (away from home), you need a Level Connect WiFi bridge — Bluetooth alone does not support remote access.

4

Update the Level app

Check the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android) for a Level app update. Outdated app versions can lose compatibility with newer lock firmware. Update the app, reopen it, and check if the connection issue is resolved. After updating, the app may prompt you to update the lock firmware as well — follow the prompts if available.

5

Remove and re-add the lock in the app

If the lock remains unresponsive in the app: delete the lock from the Level app (Settings > Devices > your lock > Remove). Then re-add it: tap + and follow the setup process. Put the lock in pairing mode by pulling the battery tab (if new) or reinserting the battery. The app scans for the lock via Bluetooth. After re-pairing, reconfigure auto-unlock, access codes, and shared user permissions.

Quick Solutions

Move within Bluetooth range of the lock
Enable Bluetooth and grant the app permission
Replace the CR2 battery with a fresh lithium cell
Disconnect other paired phones holding the link
Add a Level Connect for remote (away-from-home) control
Update the Level app and lock firmware
Reduce nearby Bluetooth/2.4GHz interference
Force-close and reopen the app to refresh the session

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Phone out of Bluetooth range of the lock
  • Bluetooth off or app lacks Bluetooth permission
  • Weak CR2 battery affecting the radio
  • Another phone holding the Bluetooth connection
