Problem Description

Your Schlage Encode smart lock will not connect to WiFi or the Schlage Home app. The lock works fine with the keypad and physical key but you cannot control it remotely view access history or manage user codes through the app. The Schlage Encode has built-in WiFi unlike many smart locks that require a hub making WiFi connection essential for all smart features. This is typically caused by WiFi band issues router security settings or the lock failing to enter pairing mode.

Symptoms

  • Schlage Home app cannot find the lock during setup
  • Lock keypad works but app shows device offline
  • WiFi setup fails during initial configuration
  • Lock was connected but went offline after router change
  • App says lock not found on network
  • Lock connected to WiFi but app cannot communicate

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Router not providing 2.4GHz network for lock
  • WiFi password contains unsupported special characters
  • Lock not in pairing mode during setup
  • Router using WPA3 which lock may not support
  • Lock firmware needs update for WiFi stability
  • Router AP isolation preventing app to lock communication

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

The Schlage Encode stores up to 100 access codes locally. Even if WiFi is offline all programmed codes continue to work on the physical keypad. WiFi issues only affect remote control and access history not physical lock operation.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Enter Programming Mode

On the lock keypad press the Schlage button then enter your programming code. The Schlage button will flash orange. Then in the Schlage Home app tap Add Accessory and follow the WiFi setup prompts. The lock must be in programming mode for the app to communicate with it over Bluetooth for initial WiFi configuration.

2

Connect to 2.4GHz Network

The Schlage Encode only supports 2.4GHz WiFi. If your router uses a combined SSID for dual band create a separate 2.4GHz network. Connect your phone to this same 2.4GHz network before starting setup. The phone and lock must be on the same network for the app to discover and communicate with the lock after WiFi setup.

3

Set WPA2 Security

Change your router WiFi security to WPA2-Personal. Disable WPA3 and transition modes. Use a simple password with only letters and numbers no longer than 32 characters. The Schlage WiFi module has known compatibility issues with WPA3 and certain special characters in passwords.

4

Disable AP Isolation

Some routers have AP or client isolation enabled by default which prevents WiFi devices from communicating with each other on the same network. This blocks the Schlage app on your phone from reaching the lock even though both are on the same WiFi. Log into your router and disable AP isolation or client isolation in the WiFi settings.

5

Reset Lock WiFi

If the lock previously connected but went offline reset its WiFi configuration. On the lock keypad enter programming mode and navigate to WiFi settings and select Reset WiFi. Then redo the WiFi setup process from the Schlage Home app. A fresh WiFi configuration clears any stale connection data preventing reconnection.

Quick Solutions

Create dedicated 2.4GHz WiFi network
Simplify WiFi password to alphanumeric only
Enter programming mode on lock then start WiFi setup
Set router to WPA2-PSK security
Update lock firmware via Bluetooth first
Disable AP isolation on router

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.

Pro Tip

After connecting assign a static IP to the Schlage lock in your router DHCP settings. Smart locks are critical security devices and an IP change after router reboot can leave you unable to control the lock remotely.

Real-World Insight

Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Router not providing 2.4GHz network for lock
  • WiFi password contains unsupported special characters
  • Lock not in pairing mode during setup
  • Router using WPA3 which lock may not support
  • Lock firmware needs update for WiFi stability
