Why Won't My Schlage Encode Plus Work With Apple Home Key?

Your Schlage Encode Plus smart lock is set up in Apple Home but Home Key on your iPhone or Apple Watch does not unlock the door when you tap it against the lock. The lock may flash but nothing happens or the Watch shows Done but the deadbolt does not move.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
When Home Key is set up but still won't unlock, the tap is usually being read — the problem is the lock can't act on it: a home hub is offline, the deadbolt is binding, or the batteries are low. Home Key relies on the lock's HomeKit/Thread connection and a working motor, not just the NFC tap.
Confirm a home hub (HomePod/Apple TV) is online and the lock shows responsive in the Apple Home app, then check the deadbolt physically throws without sticking and the AAs are fresh. Re-enable Express Mode in Wallet and update both iOS and lock firmware. If the accessory shows unresponsive in Home, resetting its connection (or re-adding the lock) restores the tap-to-unlock.

Update Schlage Encode Plus Firmware
Open Schlage Home app on your phone. Select your Encode Plus lock from the device list. Tap the gear icon for settings. Check for firmware updates and install if available. Wait 5 minutes for the lock to reboot after update. Outdated firmware is the number one cause of Home Key failures.
Regenerate Home Key by Removing Lock
Open Apple Home app on your iPhone. Find your Schlage Encode Plus lock and tap it. Tap Settings gear then scroll down and tap Remove Accessory. Confirm removal which deletes the Home Key from Wallet. Re-add the lock to HomeKit through Schlage Home app. When prompted add the new Home Key to Apple Wallet. This fixes corrupted Home Key pairing from software updates.
Enable Express Mode in Wallet
Open Wallet app on iPhone. Tap your Home Key card. Tap the three dots menu in top right corner. Make sure Express Mode toggle is turned ON. With Express Mode you do not need Face ID to unlock. Just tap phone or watch against the Schlage logo on lock.
Fix Apple Watch Home Key
If iPhone Home Key works but Watch does not the Watch pairing is corrupted. Open Watch app on iPhone and go to My Watch tab. Scroll down and tap Wallet and Apple Pay. Find your Home Key and remove it. The Home Key will re-sync to Watch from iPhone automatically. If that fails unpair and re-pair the Apple Watch entirely.
