- Lock not fully added to Apple Home
- iCloud/Apple Home sync issue
- Home hub offline
Problem Description
The Encode Plus adds a Home Key pass to Apple Wallet so you can tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock — but the card only appears once the lock is properly added to Apple Home, and it can go missing or fail to generate. This covers when the Wallet pass won't appear, disappears, or won't unlock the door.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
The Encode Plus's Apple Wallet key is generated by Apple Home, not added manually — so if no pass appears (or one vanishes), the real issue is the lock's connection to Apple Home or an iCloud sync problem. Wallet just mirrors whatever Apple Home holds for the lock.
Make sure the lock is fully added in the Apple Home app on a device signed into the right Apple ID, with iCloud Keychain and Home sync enabled and a home hub online — that's what populates the Wallet pass with Express Mode. Updating iOS clears cases where the card won't add. If a firmware update or re-pair wiped it, re-adding the lock regenerates the key.
Symptoms
- Home Key card won't appear in Wallet
- Pass missing after setup
- Can't add the key to Wallet
- Card there but won't unlock
- Key gone after an update
- Express Mode toggle missing
- Only on one device
- Wallet says it can't add the key
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Lock not fully added to Apple Home
- iCloud/Apple Home sync issue
- Home hub offline
- iOS out of date
- Signed into the wrong Apple ID
- Express Mode disabled
- Thread/hub connectivity lost
- Firmware update reset the pairing
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution
Verify your Encode Plus supports Apple Home Key
Only the Schlage Encode Plus (model BE499) supports Apple Home Key and Apple Wallet. The standard Encode (BE489) does not. Check the model number on the back of the interior assembly. The Encode Plus has a Thread radio for HomeKit communication. It must be set up with Apple HomeKit through the Apple Home app — not just the Schlage Home app.
Add the lock to Apple HomeKit
In the Apple Home app, tap + > Add Accessory. Scan the HomeKit setup code on the Schlage Encode Plus (code is on the installation guide or on the back of the interior assembly). The Home app adds the lock and configures Thread communication. The lock must be within range of a Thread border router (HomePod mini, HomePod 2nd gen, or Apple TV 4K 2nd gen) for HomeKit communication.
Add Home Key to Apple Wallet
After the lock is added to HomeKit, open the Apple Home app. Tap the lock. You should see an option to Add to Wallet or Express Mode. Tap it. The Home Key is added to your Apple Wallet. You can now unlock the door by holding your iPhone or Apple Watch near the lock keypad — no app or authentication needed if Express Mode is enabled. With Express Mode off, you need Face ID or passcode confirmation before unlocking.

$7.29Share Home Keys with family members
In the Apple Home app, invite household members (they must have an Apple ID and an iPhone or Apple Watch). Once they accept the Home invitation, they can add the Home Key to their own Apple Wallet. You can remove someone access by removing them from the Home. Each household member can choose their own Express Mode setting — some may prefer requiring Face ID for security.
Fix Home Key not working at the door
If tapping your phone on the lock does not unlock: make sure NFC is enabled on your iPhone (Settings > General > NFC). Check that the Home Key is in your Wallet app and not expired. Try holding your phone closer to the keypad area (within 1-2 inches). If the lock beeps but does not unlock, the Thread network may be down — check that your HomePod mini or Apple TV is powered on and connected. Restart the lock by removing and reinserting the batteries if Home Key worked before and suddenly stopped.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.
Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
