Problem Description

Your Schlage Encode Plus does not unlock when you hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the lock using Apple Home Key. The lock does not beep or respond to the NFC tap. The Home Key works at other times or worked previously but has become intermittent. The Schlage Home app and keypad still function normally. Home Key uses NFC communication which requires very close proximity and specific conditions to trigger reliably on the Schlage Encode Plus.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

An Encode Plus that doesn't respond to Home Key at all often has Express Mode turned off — without it, iOS expects Face ID or Touch ID authentication before the tap works, so a simple tap does nothing. The other common causes are a home hub offline or the lock having lost its Thread connection.

Open the Home Key pass in Wallet and turn on Express Mode so a bare tap unlocks, then confirm a home hub is online and the lock is responsive in Apple Home. Tap the top edge of the iPhone precisely on the lock's reader area, ideally without a thick case. If it still ignores taps, fresh batteries, a freely-throwing deadbolt, and updated iOS/firmware clear the remaining causes.

Symptoms

  • No unlock when holding iPhone to the lock
  • Tap does nothing at all
  • Lock ignores Home Key entirely
  • No haptic or response on the phone
  • Watch also ignored
  • Works by keypad only
  • Dead to taps since recently
  • Never responded to Home Key

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Express Mode off (needs Face ID auth otherwise)
  • Lock not properly holding the Home Key pass
  • Home hub offline
  • Thread/Bluetooth connectivity lost
  • Tapping the wrong part of the lock
  • Low batteries or deadbolt binding
  • iOS or firmware out of date
  • NFC blocked by a thick case/accessory

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not attempt to reprogram the NFC antenna by opening the lock housing. The Schlage Encode Plus NFC reader is factory calibrated and any physical tampering will void the warranty and potentially disable Home Key permanently.

Tools & Requirements

4 AA batteries (lithium recommended)

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Use Correct NFC Tap Position

The Schlage Encode Plus NFC antenna is located directly behind the Schlage logo at the top of the exterior keypad. The iPhone NFC reader is at the top edge of the phone. Hold your iPhone with the top edge touching the Schlage logo and hold it there for 2 full seconds. Do not wave the phone or tap quickly. The NFC communication needs sustained proximity of less than 4 centimetres. For Apple Watch press the side button to bring up the Home Key card then hold the watch face flat against the Schlage logo. Most Home Key failures are incorrect positioning.

2

Re-Provision Home Key Credential

Open the Apple Home app on your iPhone. Find the Schlage Encode Plus in your home. Tap and hold the lock tile then tap the gear icon. Scroll down to Home Key and toggle it off. Wait 30 seconds then toggle it back on. You will see the Home Key card update in the Apple Wallet app. This refreshes the NFC credential between your iPhone and the lock. Expired or corrupted credentials are the second most common cause of Home Key failures. After re-provisioning test by tapping the lock immediately.

3

Replace Lock Batteries

The Schlage Encode Plus uses 4 AA batteries. When batteries drop below 40 percent the lock prioritizes deadbolt motor power over the NFC reader. The NFC antenna requires consistent voltage to detect the Home Key signal. Replace all 4 batteries with fresh Energizer Lithium AA batteries. Do not mix battery types or old and new batteries. After replacing test Home Key within 5 minutes. Low battery is the top cause of intermittent Home Key failures where it works sometimes and not others.

4

Test Without Phone Case

Thick phone cases especially those with metal kickstands MagSafe magnets or card holders can block or interfere with the NFC signal. Remove your iPhone case completely and tap the lock. If Home Key works immediately without the case the case is the issue. Switch to a case that does not have metal plates near the top edge of the phone. Most thin silicone and clear cases allow NFC to pass through. Folio wallet cases with credit cards are the most common NFC blockers.

5

Update Lock and iPhone Firmware

Open the Schlage Home app and check the Encode Plus for firmware updates. Schlage has released multiple firmware updates improving Home Key NFC responsiveness and fixing communication timing issues. Install any available update. Also make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version by going to Settings then General then Software Update. Apple frequently updates the Home Key NFC stack in iOS releases. After both updates re-provision the Home Key credential one more time and test.

Quick Solutions

Enable Express Mode so a plain tap works
Confirm the Home Key pass is valid in Wallet
Bring the home hub online
Restore Thread/BT connectivity to the lock
Tap the top of the iPhone on the reader area
Replace batteries and align the deadbolt
Update iOS and lock firmware
Remove a thick case that blocks NFC

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Add Express Mode in iPhone Settings under Wallet and Apple Pay then Home Key. With Express Mode enabled you do not need to authenticate with Face ID before tapping. The phone automatically presents the Home Key credential when the NFC field is detected making unlocking faster and more reliable.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Express Mode off (needs Face ID auth otherwise)
  • Lock not properly holding the Home Key pass
  • Home hub offline
  • Thread/Bluetooth connectivity lost
  • Tapping the wrong part of the lock
