Problem Description

Your Schlage Encode Plus does not unlock when you hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the lock using Apple Home Key. The lock does not beep or respond to the NFC tap. The Home Key works at other times or worked previously but has become intermittent. The Schlage Home app and keypad still function normally. Home Key uses NFC communication which requires very close proximity and specific conditions to trigger reliably on the Schlage Encode Plus.

Symptoms

  • Holding iPhone near lock produces no response at all no beep or LED
  • Apple Watch tap sometimes works and sometimes does not respond
  • Home Key worked reliably for months then became intermittent
  • Lock unlocks via Schlage app and keypad but not via Home Key NFC
  • iPhone shows Home Key card in Wallet but lock does not respond to tap
  • Lock beeps once on NFC tap but does not unlock the deadbolt

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • iPhone NFC reader position not aligned with lock NFC antenna location
  • Apple Home Key credential expired and needs to be re-provisioned in HomeKit
  • Lock battery below 40 percent reducing NFC reader sensitivity
  • iPhone case blocking NFC signal from reaching lock antenna
  • iOS update changed NFC power management affecting Home Key reliability
  • Lock firmware out of date missing Home Key NFC communication patches

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not attempt to reprogram the NFC antenna by opening the lock housing. The Schlage Encode Plus NFC reader is factory calibrated and any physical tampering will void the warranty and potentially disable Home Key permanently.

Tools & Requirements

4 AA batteries (lithium recommended)

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Use Correct NFC Tap Position

The Schlage Encode Plus NFC antenna is located directly behind the Schlage logo at the top of the exterior keypad. The iPhone NFC reader is at the top edge of the phone. Hold your iPhone with the top edge touching the Schlage logo and hold it there for 2 full seconds. Do not wave the phone or tap quickly. The NFC communication needs sustained proximity of less than 4 centimetres. For Apple Watch press the side button to bring up the Home Key card then hold the watch face flat against the Schlage logo. Most Home Key failures are simply incorrect positioning.

2

Re-Provision Home Key Credential

Open the Apple Home app on your iPhone. Find the Schlage Encode Plus in your home. Tap and hold the lock tile then tap the gear icon. Scroll down to Home Key and toggle it off. Wait 30 seconds then toggle it back on. You will see the Home Key card update in the Apple Wallet app. This refreshes the NFC credential between your iPhone and the lock. Expired or corrupted credentials are the second most common cause of Home Key failures. After re-provisioning test by tapping the lock immediately.

3

Replace Lock Batteries

The Schlage Encode Plus uses 4 AA batteries. When batteries drop below 40 percent the lock prioritizes deadbolt motor power over the NFC reader. The NFC antenna requires consistent voltage to detect the Home Key signal. Replace all 4 batteries with fresh Energizer Lithium AA batteries. Do not mix battery types or old and new batteries. After replacing test Home Key within 5 minutes. Low battery is the top cause of intermittent Home Key failures where it works sometimes and not others.

4

Test Without Phone Case

Thick phone cases especially those with metal kickstands MagSafe magnets or card holders can block or interfere with the NFC signal. Remove your iPhone case completely and tap the lock. If Home Key works immediately without the case the case is the issue. Switch to a case that does not have metal plates near the top edge of the phone. Most thin silicone and clear cases allow NFC to pass through. Folio wallet cases with credit cards are the most common NFC blockers.

5

Update Lock and iPhone Firmware

Open the Schlage Home app and check the Encode Plus for firmware updates. Schlage has released multiple firmware updates improving Home Key NFC responsiveness and fixing communication timing issues. Install any available update. Also ensure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version by going to Settings then General then Software Update. Apple frequently updates the Home Key NFC stack in iOS releases. After both updates re-provision the Home Key credential one more time and test.

Quick Solutions

Position iPhone top edge directly against the Schlage logo on the lock
Remove and re-add Home Key in Apple Home app to refresh NFC credential
Replace lock batteries and test Home Key immediately after replacement
Remove thick phone case temporarily to test if NFC signal improves
Update iPhone to latest iOS version for Home Key bug fixes
Update Schlage Encode Plus firmware through Schlage Home app

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Add Express Mode in iPhone Settings under Wallet and Apple Pay then Home Key. With Express Mode enabled you do not need to authenticate with Face ID before tapping. The phone automatically presents the Home Key credential when the NFC field is detected making unlocking faster and more reliable.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

  • Apple Home Key credential expired and needs to be
  • Lock battery below 40 percent reducing NFC reader sensitivity
  • iPhone case blocking NFC signal from reaching lock antenna
