Problem Description

Your Schlage smart lock is not accepting access codes when entered on the keypad. Verify the code works by entering it directly on the keypad (press the Schlage button to wake the keypad, then enter your code). If the code was recently added through the app, it may not have synced to the lock yet. This guide covers testing codes, syncing, and reprogramming.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

A Schlage access code that won't work is usually a sync or scheduling issue rather than a keypad fault — a code added while the lock was offline never reached it, a scheduled code is being used outside its window, or two codes conflict. The lock only honors codes that are actually stored on it and currently valid.

Re-add the code in the Schlage Home app with the lock online so it syncs, and check that any schedule on the code covers the time you're using it. Make sure it's a unique 4-8 digit code with no duplicate, then delete and recreate it if it stays stubborn. Fresh batteries and current firmware clear the remaining cases where valid codes are refused.

Symptoms

  • A specific access code won't work
  • New code not accepted
  • Code rejected with a red flash
  • Code works sometimes
  • Guest/temporary code failing
  • Code deleted itself
  • Code works on keypad but not remotely
  • All codes suddenly invalid

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Code not saved/synced to the lock
  • Code outside its scheduled time window
  • Duplicate or conflicting code
  • Code length invalid (must be 4-8 digits)
  • Lock offline when the code was added
  • Keypad lockout active
  • Low batteries
  • Firmware/app out of sync

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Verify the code on the keypad directly

Stand at the lock and enter the code, then press the Schlage button (checkmark). Watch the LED: green flash means accepted, red flash means rejected. If the LED does not light at all, the lock batteries may be dead — replace the 4 AA batteries. If the LED flashes red, the code is either wrong, not programmed, or disabled. Double-check the code — codes are 4-8 digits, and entering the wrong number of digits causes rejection.

2

Check if the code is active in the app

In the Schlage Home app (for Encode models) or your Z-Wave hub app (for Connect models), check the code list. Find the code entry and verify: the code matches what you are entering, the code is toggled On/Active, and if it has a schedule, the current time falls within the scheduled window. A scheduled code that is set for weekdays 9 AM - 5 PM will not work on Saturday or at 8 PM.

3

Check if the lock is in vacation mode or lockout

Schlage locks have a Vacation Mode that disables all user codes — only the programming code works. If Vacation Mode was accidentally enabled, all access codes stop working. On the Schlage Encode: enter the programming code, press 0, then press 0 again to check/toggle Vacation Mode. On the Connect: check your hub app for a Vacation or Lock mode setting. Also check for lockout — after 3 incorrect code entries, the lock freezes the keypad for 30 seconds to prevent brute-force attacks.

4

Reprogram the code

If the code appears correct but does not work: delete it and create a new one. In the Schlage Home app: go to Access Codes, remove the non-working code, create a new code with the same digits. On the keypad directly: enter programming code + 1 + new user code + Schlage button. Test the new code immediately. Sometimes code data becomes corrupted during sync — reprogramming clears the issue.

5

Factory reset the lock as last resort

If no codes work (including the programming code), the lock may need a factory reset. Remove the battery cover on the interior assembly. Press and hold the Schlage button while reinserting one battery. Continue holding for 10 seconds until the lock beeps and the LED turns red, then green. Release the button. The lock resets to factory defaults — all codes are erased. The default programming code reverts to the 6-digit code on the sticker inside the battery cover. Reprogram all access codes from scratch.

Quick Solutions

Re-add the code and confirm it syncs to the lock
Check the code's schedule/validity window
Use a unique 4-8 digit code (no duplicates)
Add the code with the lock online
Wait out any keypad lockout
Replace low batteries
Update firmware and re-sync codes
Delete and recreate a stubborn code

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Code not saved/synced to the lock
  • Code outside its scheduled time window
  • Duplicate or conflicting code
  • Code length invalid (must be 4-8 digits)
  • Lock offline when the code was added
