Problem Description

Calibration teaches the SwitchBot Curtain where your curtains are fully open and fully closed so it can move to accurate positions. This covers when the Curtain won't calibrate, loses its calibration, or opens and closes to the wrong points.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Calibration is how the Curtain learns the endpoints of its travel — the fully-open and fully-closed positions — so any command like "50%" lands correctly. When it opens or closes to the wrong spot, the stored endpoints are off, usually because calibration didn't finish or the unit slipped or was pulled by hand.

In the SwitchBot app, run calibration and set the genuine full-open and full-close positions, making sure the curtain moves smoothly end to end without slipping and the correct rod type is selected. Charge the battery and clear any friction along the track. Recalibrate whenever you move or reinstall the unit, and drive it from the app rather than pulling curtains by hand to keep the reference intact.

Symptoms

  • Curtain opens/closes to the wrong point
  • Calibration won't complete
  • Positions drift after use
  • Percentage doesn't match reality
  • Stops short of open or closed
  • Lost calibration after moving it
  • Inconsistent travel
  • Won't hold the set positions

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Calibration not completed fully
  • Manual pulling shifted the reference
  • Slipping on the rod during travel
  • Low battery causing missed movement
  • Obstruction/friction along the track
  • Wrong rod type selected
  • Mount moved or reinstalled
  • Firmware needs updating

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Never exceed the smart plug maximum wattage rating listed on the device or packaging. Do not use smart plugs with space heaters, high-wattage appliances, or devices that must not be interrupted like medical equipment. Smart plugs are not designed for outdoor use unless specifically rated for it.

SwitchBot app

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Run the initial calibration

In the SwitchBot app, tap your Curtain device > Settings > Calibration. The app prompts you to set two positions: Fully Open and Fully Closed. Move the curtain manually to the fully open position and tap Set Open Position. Move the curtain to the fully closed position and tap Set Closed Position. The SwitchBot Curtain measures the distance between these two points and uses it for all future positioning.

2

Fix calibration drift

Over time, the SwitchBot Curtain may drift — the fully closed position does not fully close the curtain, or the fully open position leaves a gap. This happens when the curtain hooks slip, the track has friction changes, or the motor wheels accumulate dust. Re-run calibration: go to Settings > Calibration > Recalibrate. Set the open and closed positions again. After recalibration, test by commanding 0% (closed) and 100% (open).

3

Adjust for heavy curtains

Heavy curtains require more motor force and can cause the Curtain motor to stall or stop short of the fully closed position. In the SwitchBot app, check the motor settings for a Force Adjustment or Motor Speed option. Set it to the highest force level. If the curtain still does not reach the end: lubricate the curtain track with a dry silicone spray to reduce friction. For very heavy panels, pair two SwitchBot Curtain units (one on each side) or one per panel on double-sided curtains.

4

Fix the curtain opening or closing past the set point

If the curtain overshoots (goes past the fully open or closed position), the calibration end points were set incorrectly or the track has less friction than expected (the motor coasts past the stop point). Recalibrate with the curtain at its actual physical stop — push it firmly against the wall or end stop before setting the position. Also check that the curtain rod end caps (finials) are secure — if a finial is missing, the curtain can slide off the rod.

5

Calibrate percentage positions

After setting fully open and closed, test intermediate positions. Command 50% and check if the curtain is at the midpoint. If not, the calibration distance is slightly off — recalibrate by being very precise with the open and closed positions. Some SwitchBot Curtain models also support a Favorite Position — set it to a commonly used angle (e.g., 30% open for light filtering). Access the favorite position with one button press in the app or through a SwitchBot scene.

Quick Solutions

Run calibration and set true full-open and full-close
Avoid manually pulling the curtain once calibrated
Fix any slipping (clean rod, reduce load)
Charge the battery / check solar charging
Clear obstructions and free sticking rings
Select the correct rod type
Recalibrate after moving or reinstalling
Update the firmware

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Use smart plugs with energy monitoring to track exactly how much electricity each appliance uses. Set up Away Mode schedules that randomly toggle lamps on and off to make your home look occupied when you are traveling.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Calibration not completed fully
  • Manual pulling shifted the reference
  • Slipping on the rod during travel
  • Low battery causing missed movement
  • Obstruction/friction along the track
