- Dead or low batteries
- Pump not running during the test window
- Skimmer flow blocked
Problem Description
The WaterGuru app shows stale readings that have not updated in hours or days, or the SENSE device shows as offline in the app. WaterGuru SENSE installs inside the skimmer basket and tests water only when the pump is running, transmitting results over WiFi to the WaterGuru cloud. If the pump schedule does not overlap with the SENSE testing window, or WiFi signal at the skimmer is weak, readings stop updating.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
WaterGuru SENSE only tests when the pump runs water through the skimmer, so stale readings are usually dead batteries, the pump not running at the test window, blocked skimmer flow, or a WiFi drop. In real pools a pump schedule that does not overlap the test window is a classic cause of gaps.
Check the batteries and pump timing and confirm skimmer flow before re-pairing WiFi.
Symptoms
- App readings are stale or not updating
- No new tests appearing
- Last reading hours or days old
- SENSE seems inactive
- Data gaps
- App shows offline
- Tests skipped
- Readings frozen
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Dead or low batteries
- Pump not running during the test window
- Skimmer flow blocked
- WiFi connection dropped
- Test cassette empty or expired
- Weak WiFi at the skimmer
- Missed test schedule
- Router changed
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Step-by-Step Solution
Verify the pump is running during the SENSE test window
WaterGuru SENSE only tests water when it detects flow through the skimmer — which requires the pool pump to be running. Open the WaterGuru app and go to Settings > Pump Schedule. The SENSE needs at least 2 hours of pump runtime during its scheduled test window (typically early morning). If your pump schedule does not overlap with the test window, SENSE has no water flowing past it and cannot test. Adjust either the pump schedule or the SENSE test window in the app so they overlap by at least 2 hours.
Check WiFi signal at the skimmer location
The SENSE sits inside the skimmer, which is typically at the far edge of the pool, often behind a concrete or fiberglass wall. WiFi signal may be significantly weaker here than inside the house. Open the WaterGuru app and check the device signal strength indicator. If signal is weak, add an outdoor WiFi access point or range extender near the pool equipment. The SENSE connects to 2.4 GHz WiFi only — ensure your router has a 2.4 GHz SSID available.
Check and replace batteries
The SENSE runs on 4 AA batteries. Lithium AA batteries last approximately 6 months; alkaline batteries last about 3 months. When battery voltage drops below a threshold, the SENSE stops WiFi transmission to conserve power. Open the skimmer lid, lift out the skimmer basket (the SENSE sits inside or on top of the basket), and check the battery compartment. Replace all four batteries at once. Use lithium AA batteries (Energizer Ultimate Lithium) for the longest life — they also perform better in outdoor temperature extremes.
Check the test cassette status
The SENSE uses replaceable photometric test cassettes that last approximately 30 days. When the cassette is exhausted, the SENSE cannot perform tests even if the pump is running and WiFi is connected. The WaterGuru app shows cassette life remaining under Device Status. If the cassette shows 0% or Expired, replace it. Slide the old cassette out from the bottom of the SENSE unit and insert a new one — align the arrow on the cassette with the arrow on the housing. Run a manual test from the app after insertion to confirm the new cassette is working.
Re-pair the SENSE to WiFi
If the SENSE was connected but stopped after a router change, power outage, or password update, the stored WiFi credentials are stale. Remove the SENSE from the skimmer. Press the pairing button on the device (small button on the side) for 5 seconds until the LED flashes. Open the WaterGuru app, go to Settings > Device > Reconnect WiFi. Enter your current WiFi SSID and password. Hold your phone near the SENSE (within 5 feet) during setup — initial configuration uses Bluetooth to transfer credentials.
Ensure the skimmer basket allows adequate water flow
If the skimmer basket is clogged with leaves and debris, water does not flow past the SENSE intake port and the device cannot draw a water sample. Clean the skimmer basket regularly. The SENSE should sit inside the basket with its intake port facing the incoming water flow (toward the pool). If the SENSE is sitting on top of debris, the intake can get blocked. Some skimmer designs require an adapter ring to hold the SENSE at the correct height — check the WaterGuru support page for your skimmer compatibility.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
The WaterGuru SENSE user guide is at https://www.waterguru.com/support — it covers skimmer installation, test cassette replacement, battery types, and WiFi troubleshooting. The most common reason for stale readings is the pump schedule not overlapping with the SENSE test window — this is the first thing to check. WaterGuru sells test cassette subscription plans for automatic monthly delivery so you never run out.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Dead or low batteries
- Pump not running during the test window
- Skimmer flow blocked
- WiFi connection dropped
- Test cassette empty or expired
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
