- Sensor battery depleted (CR1632)
- Sensor too far from the hub (weak Zigbee)
- The two halves misaligned or the gap too wide
Problem Description
If the sensor stops updating, battery or signal issues are common. This guide restores sensor updates and checks hub connectivity.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
If the sensor stops updating, battery or signal issues are common. This guide restores sensor updates and checks hub connectivity. In day-to-day use, this usually looks like Sensor status stuck; No open/close alerts; Battery low icon.
Most cases trace back to Battery depleted; Sensor too far from hub; Magnet misaligned. The fix works best when you go step by step instead of changing multiple settings at once.
A practical order for this issue is: Replace Battery -> Check Range -> Align Magnet -> Restart Hub. After each step, test the exact behavior that was failing so you can confirm what actually solved it.
Symptoms
- Sensor status stuck on open or closed
- No open/close alerts when the door moves
- Low-battery icon on the sensor
- Sensor reports late or intermittently
- Status updates only after re-pairing
- Sensor recently moved to a new spot
- Stopped updating after a firmware update
- Other sensors update but this one does not
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Sensor battery depleted (CR1632)
- Sensor too far from the hub (weak Zigbee)
- The two halves misaligned or the gap too wide
- Zigbee network busy or congested
- Sensor firmware outdated
- Metal door or frame weakening the signal
- Sensor dropped its pairing and needs re-adding
- No Zigbee repeater between the sensor and hub
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Keep the magnet aligned to avoid missed open/close events.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Replace the CR1632 Battery
The Aqara door/window sensor uses a CR1632 coin cell battery. Pry open the sensor case using the notch on the side. Remove the old battery and insert a fresh CR1632 with the positive (+) side facing up. When the battery is inserted correctly, the LED on the sensor should flash once to confirm power.
Check Zigbee Range to Hub
The Aqara sensor communicates via Zigbee and needs to be within range of the Aqara hub or a Zigbee repeater device. If the sensor is more than 30 feet from the hub (or separated by thick walls), it may not reliably report open/close events. Move the hub closer or add a Zigbee-powered device (like an Aqara smart plug) between the hub and sensor to extend the mesh.
Align the Magnet Within 15mm
The sensor detects open/close using a reed switch and a separate magnet piece. When the door is closed, the magnet must be within 15mm (about half an inch) of the sensor, with the alignment marks lined up. If the magnet has shifted — common on doors that slam — reposition it using fresh adhesive tape. Test by opening and closing the door while watching the Aqara app for status changes.
Power Cycle the Aqara Hub
Unplug the Aqara hub from power for 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for the LED to turn solid green (indicating it is online). This forces the hub to rebuild its Zigbee network table. All paired sensors should reconnect within 1-2 minutes. Check the Aqara app to confirm the door sensor shows as online.
Re-Pair the Sensor to the Hub
If the sensor still does not update after a battery change and hub restart, remove it from the Aqara app and re-pair it. In the app, go to the sensor device page and delete it. Then hold the reset button on the sensor (small button on the side) for 5 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly. Add a new accessory in the Aqara app and follow the pairing wizard.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Place sensors away from large metal surfaces that block Zigbee signals.
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
- Sensor battery depleted (CR1632)
- Sensor too far from the hub (weak Zigbee)
- The two halves misaligned or the gap too wide
- Zigbee network busy or congested
- Sensor firmware outdated
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
