- Sensor and magnet too far apart or misaligned
- Sensor battery depleted and needs replacement
- Sensor lost communication with base station
Problem Description
Your Ring Alarm contact sensor is not detecting when a door or window is opened or closed. The Ring app may show the sensor as permanently open or permanently closed regardless of the actual door position. This compromises your security system because the alarm will not trigger when an entry point is breached. The issue is usually caused by sensor misalignment battery failure or a communication problem with the base station.
Symptoms
- Ring app shows door open when it is physically closed
- Sensor status never changes when door is opened or closed
- Alarm does not trigger when protected door is opened
- Sensor shows offline or unresponsive in Ring app
- Battery warning displayed for contact sensor
- Sensor worked previously but stopped detecting recently
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Sensor and magnet too far apart or misaligned
- Sensor battery depleted and needs replacement
- Sensor lost communication with base station
- Door frame shifted causing permanent gap detection
- Sensor adhesive failed and sensor moved from position
- Extreme temperature caused sensor electronics failure
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not use rechargeable batteries in Ring contact sensors. They provide lower voltage than lithium batteries and can cause unreliable sensor behavior or premature offline status.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check Sensor and Magnet Alignment
The Ring contact sensor has two pieces. The larger piece is the sensor and the smaller piece is the magnet. When the door is closed these two pieces must be within half an inch of each other and the alignment marks must be facing each other. If the gap is too wide the sensor reads as open even when the door is closed. Check both the horizontal and vertical alignment. Seasonal door frame expansion can shift alignment over time.
Replace Sensor Battery
The Ring contact sensor uses a single CR123A 3V lithium battery. Open the sensor by pressing the tab and sliding the cover off. Remove the old battery and insert a new CR123A battery with the positive end facing the correct direction as marked inside the battery compartment. Low battery is the most common cause of sensors that stop responding. Even if the app does not show a low battery warning try a fresh battery first.
Test Sensor Communication
After checking alignment and battery open the Ring app and go to the sensor in your device list. Check the signal strength indicator in Device Health. If the signal is weak the sensor may be too far from the base station or there are too many walls between them. Try opening and closing the door several times while watching the app to see if the status updates. A delay of more than 3 seconds indicates a signal problem.
Remove and Re-Add Sensor
If the sensor still does not respond remove it from your Ring system in the app. Go to Devices then the sensor then Device Settings then Remove Device. Then add the sensor back as a new device following the in-app pairing instructions. This forces a fresh connection between the sensor and the base station. Place the base station within 15 feet during the pairing process for the strongest initial connection.
Reinstall Sensor with Proper Mounting
If the adhesive has loosened and the sensor has shifted clean the mounting surface with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely. Apply new adhesive strips or use the included screws for a permanent mount. Position the sensor piece on the door frame and the magnet piece on the door itself ensuring they are within half an inch when closed. Close the door and verify in the Ring app that the status changes from open to closed correctly.

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.
For metal doors use the included spacer bracket to mount the magnet. Metal can interfere with the magnetic field and prevent the sensor from detecting the magnet proximity correctly. **Product Intelligence:** - CR2032 battery (3yr life) - Cold temps reduce battery - Weak signal = faster drain
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
