Problem Description

Your Google Chromecast does not appear as a casting target when you try to cast from your phone, tablet, or computer. The cast icon is missing or the Chromecast does not show in the device list. This prevents you from streaming any content to your TV.

Symptoms

  • Cast icon does not appear in apps
  • Chromecast not listed in Google Home app
  • Phone cannot discover Chromecast on network
  • Chromecast was visible yesterday but not today
  • Other cast devices work but not this one
  • Chromecast LED is on but device is invisible

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Phone and Chromecast on different WiFi networks
  • Router blocking mDNS or multicast traffic
  • Chromecast WiFi connection dropped
  • Google Home app needs location permission
  • 5GHz and 2.4GHz isolation on router
  • Chromecast needs factory reset

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

A factory reset erases all settings and linked accounts. You will need to set up the Chromecast from scratch including re-linking your Google account and streaming services.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Verify Same WiFi Network

On your phone check which WiFi network you are connected to. Then open the Google Home app and check which network the Chromecast is on. Both must be on the exact same network. If your router has separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz names they count as different networks.

2

Restart Chromecast

Unplug the Chromecast power cable from the wall or the device itself. Wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. The Chromecast will take about 60 seconds to fully boot. The LED will pulse white then go solid when ready. Try casting again.

3

Check App Permissions

On your phone go to Settings and find the Google Home app. Ensure Location permission is set to Always or While Using. Also enable Local Network access. These permissions are required for your phone to discover Chromecast devices on the local network.

4

Check Router Settings

Log into your router admin panel. Look for AP Isolation or Client Isolation and make sure it is disabled. Check that multicast and mDNS are enabled. These settings allow devices on your network to discover each other which is required for casting.

5

Factory Reset Chromecast

If the Chromecast still cannot be found hold the reset button on the device for about 25 seconds until the LED flashes white. The device will restart and return to factory settings. Set it up again through the Google Home app as a new device.

Quick Solutions

Verify same WiFi network
Enable multicast on router
Restart Chromecast and router
Check Google Home app permissions
Disable AP isolation on router
Factory reset the Chromecast

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Keep your Chromecast on the same WiFi band as your phone. If your router combines 2.4GHz and 5GHz try connecting both devices to the same band for better discovery.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Phone and Chromecast on different WiFi networks
  • Router blocking mDNS or multicast traffic
  • Chromecast WiFi connection dropped
  • Google Home app needs location permission
  • 5GHz and 2.4GHz isolation on router
