Overview
Ring and Alexa are both Amazon products designed to work smoothly together. This guide shows you how to connect your Ring doorbell or cameras to Alexa for voice control, doorbell announcements on Echo devices, and live video viewing on Echo Show.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Linking Ring to Alexa is mostly account plumbing: the Ring skill has to be enabled in the Alexa app, and both services need to be on accounts you control. Most "it won't connect" cases are the skill not enabled, or Ring and Alexa signed into mismatched accounts.
Start in the Alexa app: enable the Ring skill, sign in with your Ring credentials, then discover devices. Once linked you can pull up doorbell and camera feeds on an Echo Show and get announcements; a subscription is still needed for recorded clips, but live view and announcements work without one.
What's Included
- Echo not announcing when doorbell rings
- Cannot view Ring camera on Echo Show
- Alexa says Ring device is not responding
- Ring skill shows linked but nothing works
- Live view shows loading but never connects
- Motion announcements not working on Echo
Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.
Before You Start
- Ring skill not enabled in Alexa app
- Ring and Alexa using different accounts
- Doorbell announcements not turned on
- Echo device not selected for announcements
- Ring camera is offline or disconnected
- Alexa app needs to discover Ring devices
Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do
For the best experience, use the same Amazon account for both Ring and Alexa. Using different accounts can cause linking issues.
Installation Steps
Enable the Ring Skill
Open the Alexa app on your phone. Tap More in the bottom right corner, then select Skills and Games. Search for Ring and select the official Ring skill. Tap Enable to Use. Since Ring and Alexa are both Amazon products, the skill may link automatically if you use the same account.
Discover Your Ring Devices
After enabling the skill, tap Devices at the bottom, then tap the plus icon and select Add Device. Choose Camera, then Ring. Alexa will search for your Ring devices. All your Ring doorbells, cameras, and Ring Alarm components will appear. Assign each device to a room.
Set Up Doorbell Announcements
In the Alexa app, tap Devices, then select your Ring doorbell. Tap the gear icon for settings. Scroll down to Doorbell Press Announcements and tap it. Toggle on Enable Announcements. Select which Echo devices should announce.
View Live Video on Echo Show
If you have an Echo Show, Echo Spot, or Fire TV, say Alexa show me the front door to see your doorbell camera. The live feed appears within 2-3 seconds. To talk through the camera, say Alexa talk to the front door. Say Alexa stop to close the feed.
Create Alexa Routines for Ring
In the Alexa app, tap More then Routines. Tap the plus icon. For the trigger, select Smart Home and choose your Ring doorbell motion. For the action, you can turn on lights, play announcements, or control other smart home devices.
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
Enable Motion Alerts in Ring doorbell settings within the Alexa app to get announcements whenever motion is detected, not just doorbell presses.
