- WiFi password or network name changed while battery was out
- Router assigned a different IP address to the doorbell
- Doorbell firmware corrupted during low battery shutdown
Problem Description
Your Ring Video Doorbell will not reconnect to WiFi after you removed and recharged the battery. The doorbell appears offline in the Ring app and does not respond to the doorbell button. This is one of the most common Ring issues and is typically caused by a WiFi network change or the doorbell losing its saved network credentials during the power cycle.
Symptoms
- Doorbell shows offline in Ring app after recharging
- Ring doorbell LED spins white but never connects
- Live View fails with connection error after battery swap
- Doorbell button press does not trigger notification
- Device disappeared from Ring app device list
- Ring doorbell stuck in setup mode after reinserting battery
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- WiFi password or network name changed while battery was out
- Router assigned a different IP address to the doorbell
- Doorbell firmware corrupted during low battery shutdown
- 2.4GHz WiFi band disabled or merged with 5GHz on router
- Ring doorbell too far from router for stable reconnection
- Battery not fully charged before reinserting into doorbell
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Never remove the Ring doorbell battery while a firmware update is in progress. This can corrupt the device firmware and require a full factory reset to recover.

Step-by-Step Solution
Verify Battery Charge Level
Before reinserting the battery make sure it is fully charged. The LED on the Ring battery charger should show solid green. A partially charged battery causes the doorbell to attempt reconnection but fail because it lacks sufficient power to complete the WiFi handshake and firmware boot sequence. Allow 4 to 6 hours for a full charge from empty.
Reinsert Battery and Wait for Boot
Slide the fully charged battery firmly into the Ring doorbell until it clicks into place. The front LED ring will begin spinning white indicating the device is booting up. Wait 2 to 3 full minutes for the boot process to complete. Do not press any buttons or attempt to use the app during this time as the device needs to initialize its radio and check for firmware updates.
Reconnect to WiFi via Ring App
Open the Ring app and go to Devices. If the doorbell shows offline tap on it and select Device Health then Reconnect to WiFi. Follow the on-screen prompts to select your 2.4GHz WiFi network and enter the password. The Ring doorbell does not support 5GHz WiFi so make sure you are connecting to the correct band. Your phone must be near the doorbell during this process.
Check Router Settings
Log into your router admin panel and verify that the 2.4GHz band is enabled and broadcasting. Some routers merge 2.4GHz and 5GHz into one network name which can cause Ring devices to fail connection. If possible create a separate 2.4GHz network name for your smart home devices. Also check that MAC address filtering is not blocking the doorbell.
Factory Reset If Still Offline
If the doorbell will not reconnect press and hold the orange setup button on the back of the Ring doorbell for 20 seconds. The front light will flash and then turn off indicating a factory reset. Wait 1 minute then set up the doorbell as a new device in the Ring app. You will need to go through the full setup process again but all your existing settings and recordings in the cloud are preserved.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.
Charge your Ring battery fully before every swap. A half-charged battery causes most reconnection failures. Consider buying a second battery so you can swap instantly without downtime.
App battery indicators run 15–20% behind actual charge levels — by the time the low warning appears, the device has been struggling for days.
- WiFi password or network name changed while battery was
- Router assigned a different IP address to the doorbell
- Doorbell firmware corrupted during low battery shutdown
- 2.4GHz WiFi band disabled or merged with 5GHz on

Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
