Problem Description

Your Ring Doorbell Pro randomly reboots multiple times a day. The LED ring spins white then reconnects to WiFi then reboots again minutes or hours later. You miss motion events and doorbell presses during each reboot cycle.

Symptoms

  • Doorbell LED spins white repeatedly throughout the day
  • Ring app shows device going offline then back online
  • Missed motion events and doorbell presses during reboots
  • Event history shows gaps where no recordings exist
  • Doorbell feels hot to the touch before rebooting
  • Voltage reading in Device Health shows below 3600mV

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Transformer voltage too low to sustain continuous operation
  • Existing mechanical chime drawing power away from doorbell
  • Loose wiring connection at doorbell or transformer terminals
  • Overheating from direct sun exposure causing thermal shutdown
  • Pro Power Kit not installed or wired incorrectly
  • Defective internal capacitor failing to maintain stable power

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always turn off the circuit breaker before working on doorbell wiring or the transformer. Doorbell transformers carry enough voltage to cause a painful shock.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Voltage in Device Health

Open the Ring app and go to your Doorbell Pro. Tap Device Health and check the voltage reading. It should be between 3900mV and 4000mV. If below 3600mV the doorbell is not getting enough power and will reboot when it tries to do power-intensive tasks like recording video or connecting to WiFi. This is the most common cause of random reboots.

Verify Pro Power Kit Installation

The Ring Doorbell Pro requires the included Pro Power Kit installed at your indoor chime box. Open the chime cover and verify the small module is connected across the front and trans terminals. If missing install it per the included diagram. Without it the mechanical chime draws power spikes that cause the doorbell to brown out and reboot.

3

Upgrade the Transformer

Many homes have old 10VA or 16VA transformers that cannot supply enough sustained power. The Doorbell Pro needs a 16-24 VAC transformer rated at 30VA or higher. Check the transformer rating usually located near the HVAC system or in the utility closet. If it is below 30VA replace it with a 24VAC 40VA transformer for reliable operation.

4

Inspect and Tighten Wiring

Turn off the breaker powering the transformer. Remove the doorbell from its mount and check that both wires are firmly seated in the terminal screws with no fraying or corrosion. Tighten each screw. Also check wiring at the transformer and chime box. Loose connections cause intermittent power drops that trigger reboots. Clean any green corrosion with fine sandpaper.

5

Address Overheating

If the doorbell feels very hot before rebooting it may be thermal throttling. Direct afternoon sun on a south or west facing mount can push internal temperatures past safe limits. Install a Ring corner mount to angle it away from direct sun or add a small sun shade above it. If reboots only happen on hot sunny afternoons overheating is the likely cause.

Quick Solutions

Upgrade doorbell transformer to 16-24 VAC 30VA minimum
Install or verify the Pro Power Kit at the chime box
Tighten all wiring connections at doorbell and transformer
Add a sun shade or relocate to reduce direct sun exposure
Check voltage reading in Device Health for minimum 3600mV
Replace doorbell if voltage is good but reboots continue

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

After upgrading the transformer monitor Device Health voltage for 48 hours. Stable readings above 3900mV with zero reboots confirms the power fix worked.

Real-World Insight

Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
