Problem Description

Your SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro sends push notifications to your phone but does not ring your existing indoor mechanical chime. The doorbell works for video and alerts but visitors get no audible response inside your home. You connected it to your old doorbell wires but the chime stays silent.

Symptoms

  • Doorbell button pressed but no chime sound inside
  • Phone gets notification but indoor chime silent
  • Chime worked with old doorbell but not SimpliSafe
  • Doorbell video works but mechanical chime does not ring
  • Chime rings once then never again
  • SimpliSafe app shows doorbell press but no chime

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Existing chime incompatible with SimpliSafe doorbell
  • Transformer voltage too low for doorbell plus chime
  • Chime connector not installed or installed wrong
  • Wiring connections loose at chime or transformer
  • Mechanical chime striker stuck or broken
  • Digital chime not compatible with SimpliSafe

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always turn off breaker before working on doorbell wiring. Low voltage can still shock you and damage equipment.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Chime Compatibility

SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro works with most mechanical chimes but not all digital chimes. Mechanical chimes have metal bars struck by a plunger. Digital chimes play electronic sounds. If you have a digital chime it may not be compatible. Check SimpliSafe compatibility list or try a mechanical chime.

2

Verify Transformer Power

Your existing doorbell transformer may not provide enough power for both doorbell and chime. SimpliSafe requires 16-24VAC at minimum 10VA but 30VA is recommended. A weak transformer powers the doorbell but not the chime. Upgrade to a 24VAC 40VA transformer for reliable operation.

3

Install Chime Connector Correctly

SimpliSafe includes a chime connector that must be installed at your indoor chime. Open your chime cover and find the two wires. Disconnect them and attach to the chime connector. The connector goes between transformer wire and front door wire. Without this connector your chime will not ring.

Check All Wiring Connections

Loose connections prevent current flow to chime. Turn off power at breaker. Check wires at transformer, chime connector, indoor chime, and doorbell. All connections should be tight with no exposed copper touching other wires. Retighten any loose terminals and ensure wire insulation is intact.

5

Test Chime Mechanism

Your mechanical chime striker may be stuck from age or dust. Open the chime cover and look at the plunger mechanism. Gently push the plunger to see if it moves freely and strikes the metal bars. If stuck clean with compressed air. If broken the chime needs replacement separate from doorbell issues.

Quick Solutions

Verify chime compatibility with SimpliSafe requirements
Upgrade transformer to 16-24VAC 30VA minimum
Install or reinstall chime connector correctly
Check and tighten all wiring connections
Test mechanical chime striker manually
Replace incompatible digital chime with mechanical

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.

Pro Tip

If your mechanical chime is more than 20 years old it may be easier to replace it than troubleshoot. New mechanical chimes cost about $25.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
