Problem Description

Your SimpliSafe alarm triggers in the middle of the night with no intruder and no apparent cause. The siren goes off scaring everyone awake. The app shows a sensor triggered but nothing is wrong. False alarms at night are terrifying and after a few you stop trusting the system. The cause is usually a faulty sensor or environmental trigger not an actual security threat.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Middle-of-the-night false alarms with SimpliSafe are almost always caused by entry sensors on doors or windows that shift with temperature changes. Wood frames expand and contract overnight as the house cools down, and that tiny movement is enough to break the magnetic reed switch contact inside the sensor. The Gen 3 entry sensors trigger when the magnet moves more than about 1.5 inches from the sensor body. Check the gap between your sensor and magnet — if it is already close to an inch during the day, nighttime contraction will push it over the threshold. Repositioning the magnet closer or shimming the sensor fixes it permanently.

Symptoms

  • Alarm triggers at 2-4 AM with no intruder
  • Entry sensor shows open but door is closed
  • Motion sensor triggers in empty room
  • Glassbreak sensor activates with no broken glass
  • False alarms happen only at night not daytime
  • Multiple false alarms in same week

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Entry sensor battery dying causing false triggers
  • Sensor magnet shifted from door settling at night
  • Motion sensor detecting pet or heating vent airflow
  • Glassbreak sensor triggered by thunder or loud TV
  • Temperature change at night causing door to shift
  • Sensor adhesive failing letting sensor move

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Repeated false alarms may result in fines from local police if SimpliSafe monitoring dispatches officers. After 3 false alarms in some jurisdictions you can be fined per dispatch. Fix the triggering sensor promptly.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Identify the Trigger

In the SimpliSafe app go to Timeline or Recent Activity. Find the false alarm event and note which sensor triggered it. This tells you exactly which sensor to troubleshoot. If it is the same sensor every time the fix is focused on that one device.

2

Fix Entry Sensor Issues

Entry sensors have two parts. The sensor and the magnet. They must be within half an inch of each other when the door is closed. At night temperature drops cause wood doors to contract slightly pulling them away from the frame. If the gap increases beyond the sensor range it reads as open. Move the magnet closer or add a shim behind it to reduce the gap.

3

Fix Motion Sensor Issues

Motion sensors detect heat movement. Heating vents blowing warm air across the sensor field trigger false alarms. Pets walking through the room at night also trigger them. Move the sensor away from HVAC vents. If you have pets use SimpliSafe motion sensors in pet-friendly mode or point them away from pet paths.

4

Fix Glassbreak Sensor

Glassbreak sensors listen for specific sound frequencies. Thunder heavy rain on windows and even loud TV sounds can match the frequency pattern. Move the sensor at least 10 feet from TVs and windows facing storm-exposed sides. Reduce sensitivity if the sensor has adjustable settings.

5

Replace Sensor Batteries

Dying batteries cause erratic sensor behavior including false triggers. Even if the app does not show low battery replace the battery in the sensor that is triggering false alarms. Use CR2032 or CR123A depending on sensor type. Fresh batteries fix the majority of random false alarm issues.

Quick Solutions

Replace battery in triggering sensor
Reposition magnet closer to sensor
Adjust motion sensor sensitivity or placement
Move glassbreak sensor away from noise sources
Use stronger adhesive for sensor mounting
Check sensor placement with test mode

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Use SimpliSafe test mode to verify all sensors before arming at night. Walk through your home opening and closing each door to confirm sensors respond correctly and close properly.

Real-World Insight

False alarms cluster in two windows: the first two weeks of installation, and years later as sensors age. Rarely anything in between.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Entry sensor battery dying causing false triggers
  • Sensor magnet shifted from door settling at night
  • Motion sensor detecting pet or heating vent airflow
  • Glassbreak sensor triggered by thunder or loud TV
  • Temperature change at night causing door to shift
