Problem Description

After a power outage, the base station can remain offline if it fails to reconnect to WiFi or the cellular backup is paused. This guide restores connectivity and status.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

After a power outage, the base station can remain offline if it fails to reconnect to WiFi or the cellular backup is paused. This guide restores connectivity and status. In day-to-day use, this usually looks like Base station shows offline; Keypad still works; No alerts sent.

Most cases trace back to Router reboot incomplete; WiFi credentials changed; Base station too far from router. The fix works best when you go step by step instead of changing multiple settings at once.

A practical order for this issue is: Restart Router -> Reconnect WiFi -> Relocate Base Station -> Check Cellular Backup. After each step, test the exact behavior that was failing so you can confirm what actually solved it.

Symptoms

  • Base station shows offline
  • Keypad still works
  • No alerts sent
  • WiFi network restored
  • Cellular backup unavailable
  • Recently moved the base station

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Router reboot incomplete
  • WiFi credentials changed
  • Base station too far from router
  • Cellular subscription expired
  • Firmware update pending
  • Battery backup depleted

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

If you use battery backup, charge the base station fully after an outage.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Power Cycle the Router First

After a power outage, your router and modem may have booted in the wrong order or received a new IP from your ISP. Unplug both the modem and router for 60 seconds, then plug in the modem first and wait 2 minutes. Then plug in the router and wait another 2 minutes. Once your phone shows internet access on WiFi, check the SimpliSafe app — the base station should reconnect automatically.

2

Reconnect Base Station WiFi

If the base station does not reconnect automatically, open the SimpliSafe app and go to your system > Base Station > WiFi. Select your WiFi network and re-enter the password. The base station has a WiFi antenna inside its cylindrical white body and connects to 2.4GHz only. If your router assigned a new IP range after the outage, the base station needs fresh credentials.

3

Move the Base Station Closer to the Router

If the base station keeps dropping offline, the WiFi signal may be too weak at its current location. Place the base station within 30 feet of the router with minimal walls between them. Do not place the base station on a metal surface, inside a closet, or near a microwave — all of these block or interfere with WiFi. The base station should be on a shelf or table, not on the floor.

4

Verify Cellular Backup Status

SimpliSafe systems with an Interactive Monitoring plan include cellular backup that keeps the system online if WiFi and internet go down. In the SimpliSafe app, go to your system > Base Station > Cellular. If it shows active, the system maintained alarm monitoring during the outage even without WiFi. If cellular is not active, the system was completely offline during the outage.

5

Confirm System Status in the App

Open the SimpliSafe app and check the home screen. The system should show Armed Home, Armed Away, or Off with a green checkmark. If it shows a yellow or red warning, tap the warning for details. After a power outage, some sensors may need to re-pair if their batteries died during the outage. Check the sensor list for any showing as offline or missing.

Quick Solutions

Restart router
Re-enter WiFi credentials
Move base station closer
Check cellular plan status
Update firmware
Recharge the base station

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.

Pro Tip

Keep the base station on an interior shelf away from metal enclosures.

Real-World Insight

Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Router reboot incomplete
  • WiFi credentials changed
  • Base station too far from router
  • Cellular subscription expired
  • Firmware update pending
