Problem Description

Your SimpliSafe cellular backup is not working when your internet goes down. Cellular backup requires an active monitoring plan (either Standard or Interactive). Without a paid plan, the base station has no cellular connection. Verify you have an active plan in the SimpliSafe app under Account > My Plan. This guide covers plan verification and cellular signal troubleshooting.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Cellular backup on SimpliSafe only works if you have the Interactive or Self-Monitoring plan — the basic free plan does not include cellular connectivity. Assuming you have the right plan, the Gen 3 base station uses an embedded AT&T LTE module with a SIM that is pre-provisioned at the factory. If cellular backup fails during a WiFi outage, the most likely cause is weak AT&T signal at your base station location. Basements and interior closets are terrible spots for cellular. The other common issue is that SimpliSafe's cellular SIM can get deactivated on AT&T's side if the base station has been unplugged for an extended period — you will need to contact SimpliSafe support to reactivate it because there is no user-facing fix for that.

Symptoms

  • Device shows as offline in the app
  • Device does not respond to commands
  • App cannot connect to device
  • Features not working as expected
  • Device disconnects frequently
  • Automations fail to trigger
  • Voice commands not recognized

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
  • Power supply issue or loose connection
  • Account not linked correctly
  • Too many devices causing network congestion
  • Interference from other wireless devices

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always notify your monitoring provider before performing system tests to prevent dispatching emergency services unnecessarily. Never disable your security system for extended periods. If you smell gas or suspect a real emergency call 911 directly rather than relying on your smart system.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Verify you have a monitoring plan

Cellular backup is only available with SimpliSafe Interactive or Fast Protect monitoring plans. The free self-monitoring plan does not include cellular. In the SimpliSafe app, go to Account, then Subscription, and check your plan tier. If you are on self-monitoring, upgrade to get cellular backup and professional monitoring.

2

Check cellular signal at the base station location

The base station has a built-in cellular radio. If it is in a basement, interior closet, or surrounded by thick concrete walls, cellular signal may be too weak. In the SimpliSafe app, check the cellular signal indicator. Move the base station closer to an exterior wall or window if signal is weak. Even a few feet can make a significant difference in cellular reception.

3

Test cellular backup by disconnecting WiFi

To verify cellular is working, temporarily disconnect your router or turn off your WiFi. The base station should switch to cellular within 1-2 minutes. Try arming and disarming from the keypad — if the app reflects the status change, cellular is working. If nothing happens, the cellular module may not be activated or may have failed.

4

Contact SimpliSafe to activate cellular

On some setups, the cellular module needs to be activated by SimpliSafe support. If you recently purchased the system or changed plans, call SimpliSafe and ask them to verify the cellular module is activated on your account. They can remotely check the module status and push an activation command.

5

Check for a failed cellular module

If cellular was working and stopped, and the base station is in a location with known cellular coverage, the internal cellular module may have failed. This is a hardware issue. Contact SimpliSafe support — they may send a replacement base station. Cellular module failures are uncommon but do happen, especially on base stations older than 4-5 years.

Quick Solutions

Check base station power and internet
Replace batteries in offline sensors
Test arm and disarm in all modes
Verify monitoring subscription and contacts
Adjust entry and exit delay timing
Update base station and sensor firmware

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Set up geofencing so your system arms automatically when everyone leaves home and disarms when the first person returns. This eliminates the chance of forgetting to arm the system and provides seamless daily security.

Real-World Insight

Cellular backup failures are invisible until you actually need them — most users discover the error during a monitoring incident, not a routine check.
