Problem Description

Entry sensors stop responding when the battery is low or the magnet is misaligned. This guide restores sensor alerts and connectivity.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Entry sensors stop responding when the battery is low or the magnet is misaligned. This guide restores sensor alerts and connectivity. In day-to-day use, this usually looks like Open or close alerts missing; Sensor shows offline; Battery icon low.

Most cases trace back to Battery depleted; Magnet misaligned; Sensor too far from base. The fix works best when you go step by step instead of changing multiple settings at once.

A practical order for this issue is: Replace Battery -> Align Magnet -> Check Range -> Re-Pair Sensor. After each step, test the exact behavior that was failing so you can confirm what actually solved it.

Symptoms

  • Open or close alerts missing
  • Sensor shows offline
  • Battery icon low
  • Sensor moved recently
  • Base station online
  • Alerts delayed

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Battery depleted
  • Magnet misaligned
  • Sensor too far from base
  • Sensor not paired
  • Interference from metal
  • Firmware outdated

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Avoid mounting on loose trim that can shift out of alignment.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Replace the Sensor Battery

The SimpliSafe entry sensor uses a single CR2032 coin cell battery. Open the sensor by sliding the cover off the back (it separates from the mounting plate). Replace the CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing up. After inserting the new battery, the sensor LED should flash once. Wait 60 seconds for the sensor to reconnect to the base station.

2

Check Magnet Alignment

The SimpliSafe entry sensor has two pieces: the larger sensor unit and a small magnet. The magnet must be placed within half an inch of the sensor when the door or window is closed. Look for the alignment marks (small arrows or lines) on both pieces — these should face each other. If the gap is too large or the pieces are offset, the sensor cannot detect when the door closes.

3

Check Wireless Range to Base Station

SimpliSafe entry sensors communicate with the base station via 433MHz radio. The range is about 100 feet through walls. If the sensor is far from the base station (e.g., on a garage side door while the base is upstairs), it may be out of range. Test by temporarily placing the sensor closer to the base and checking if it responds. If it works closer, you may need to relocate the base station.

4

Re-pair the Sensor

In the SimpliSafe app, go to your system > Devices > Sensors. Find the unresponsive entry sensor and remove it. Then tap Add Device > Entry Sensor and follow the pairing instructions. Remove the sensor battery and reinsert it to trigger pairing mode. The base station will chirp when it discovers the sensor. Assign it to the correct door or window location.

5

Test the Sensor

After re-pairing, arm your system to Home or Away mode. Open the door or window where the sensor is installed. The base station should announce the entry and the app should log the event. If the sensor still does not respond, try a different entry sensor in the same location — the sensor hardware may be defective (SimpliSafe offers free replacements under warranty).

Quick Solutions

Replace the battery
Realign the magnet
Move the sensor closer
Re-pair the sensor
Reduce interference
Update firmware

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Mount the magnet within the molded alignment guides for reliable alerts.

Real-World Insight

Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
