Problem Description

Your SimpliSafe entry sensor shows Not Responding in the app or the base station announces Entry Sensor Not Responding when you arm the system. Sensors issue this error when they fail to check in with the base station for more than 24 hours. This typically happens due to a dead battery, the sensor being too far from the base station, or RF interference blocking communication. A not responding sensor will not trigger an alarm if the door or window is opened making this a critical issue to resolve immediately.

Symptoms

  • App shows entry sensor not responding status
  • Base station announces sensor not responding when arming
  • Sensor worked previously but stopped responding
  • Opening the door does not trigger any notification or alarm
  • Multiple sensors showing not responding at the same time
  • Sensor shows not responding after moving the base station

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • CR-2032 battery is dead or depleted
  • Sensor is too far from the base station
  • Base station placed in a cabinet or closet weakening signal
  • RF interference from other wireless devices
  • Sensor battery was installed incorrectly
  • Sensor fell off the door frame and lost alignment
  • Thick walls or metal doors blocking RF signal
  • Sensor was never paired after a base station reset

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

A not responding entry sensor will NOT trigger an alarm if the door is opened. Do not leave this issue unresolved. If you cannot fix the sensor contact SimpliSafe support for a replacement. A sensor showing not responding for more than 48 hours after battery replacement likely has a hardware failure.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Replace the Sensor Battery

Entry sensors use one CR-2032 lithium 3V battery with a life of up to 5 years depending on usage. To replace it use a coin or flathead screwdriver to twist the back cover off the sensor. Remove the old battery and insert a new CR-2032 with the positive side facing up. Replace the cover. Wait 5 minutes for the sensor to reconnect to the base station. Check the app to see if the not responding status clears.

2

Test the Sensor in Test Mode

Put your system into test mode to verify sensor communication. On the keypad go to Menu then Test Mode and select Start Test. Open and close the door with the entry sensor. The base station should announce Entry Sensor. If it does not announce the sensor is not communicating. Check the timeline in the app for Entry Sensor Test events. If no event appears the sensor needs to be re-paired or relocated.

3

Check Base Station Placement

The base station should be in an open central location not inside a cabinet closet or near dense materials like concrete granite or metal. Move the base station out into the open at least 3 feet from walls and other electronics. Avoid placing it near your router, TV, or microwave. After moving the base station wait 30 minutes and check if the sensor reconnects.

4

Re-pair the Entry Sensor

If the sensor still shows not responding remove it from the system and re-pair it. In the app go to My System then Device Settings then select the problem sensor and tap Remove Device. After removal go to Add Device and select Entry Sensor. Follow the prompts to pair the sensor by opening and closing the door. The base station will announce Entry Sensor when pairing succeeds.

5

Verify Signal Strength

If the sensor is far from the base station or separated by thick walls signal may be too weak. Temporarily move the base station closer to the sensor location and test. If the sensor works when closer you need to find a better permanent location for the base station that provides coverage to all sensors. Consider the 400 foot maximum range is reduced by walls and interference.

Quick Solutions

Replace the CR-2032 battery in the entry sensor
Move the base station to a more central open location
Remove the sensor and re-pair it to the system
Test the sensor in test mode to verify communication
Reduce distance between sensor and base station
Remove RF interference sources near the base station

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

SimpliSafe entry sensors check in with the base station every few hours. After replacing the battery or re-pairing the sensor it may take up to 24 hours for the not responding status to fully clear in the app. You can force an immediate check-in by opening and closing the door or window several times. **Product Intelligence:** - CR-2032 battery (2-3yr) - Magnet gap: up to 1 inch

Real-World Insight

Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
