Problem Description

Calibration fails when the lock is misaligned or batteries are low. This guide checks door alignment, bolt travel, and battery power.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Calibration fails when the lock is misaligned or batteries are low. This guide checks door alignment, bolt travel, and battery power. In day-to-day use, this usually looks like Calibration fails; Lock beeps during setup; Bolt does not extend fully.

Most cases trace back to Strike plate misaligned; Door not fully closed; Batteries low. The fix works best when you go step by step instead of changing multiple settings at once.

A practical order for this issue is: Check Door Alignment -> Replace Batteries -> Tighten Mount -> Update Firmware. After each step, test the exact behavior that was failing so you can confirm what actually solved it.

Symptoms

  • Calibration fails
  • Lock beeps during setup
  • Bolt does not extend fully
  • Door hard to close
  • Batteries recently replaced
  • App shows setup error

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Strike plate misaligned
  • Door not fully closed
  • Batteries low
  • Lock mounting loose
  • Firmware outdated
  • Auto-lock delay too short

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Keep the door fully closed while calibration runs.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Door and Strike Plate Alignment

Close the door and test the deadbolt manually with the thumbturn on the interior side of the lock. The bolt should extend and retract smoothly without catching on the strike plate. If the bolt binds, the lock's motor cannot complete the throw and calibration fails. Realign the strike plate or file the strike plate opening larger so the bolt enters freely.

2

Replace Batteries

The SimpliSafe Smart Lock uses 4xAA batteries located inside the interior escutcheon (the large circular plate on the inside of the door). Remove the interior cover by pulling it straight off (it is held by magnets). Replace all 4 batteries with fresh alkaline AAs. Low batteries cause the motor to stall during calibration, resulting in a failed calibration error in the app.

3

Tighten the Interior Mounting Plate

The SimpliSafe Smart Lock has an interior mounting plate secured by two long bolts that pass through the door. If this plate is loose, the lock body shifts when the motor turns, preventing accurate calibration. Open the interior cover and tighten both mounting bolts with the included hex wrench. The lock body should not wobble when you grip it and try to rotate it.

4

Update Lock Firmware

In the SimpliSafe app, go to your system > Devices > Smart Lock > Settings. Check for firmware updates and install if available. Some firmware versions have improved calibration routines that are more tolerant of slight door misalignment. The update is sent wirelessly from the base station to the lock and takes a few minutes.

5

Run Calibration Again

In the SimpliSafe app, go to your lock settings and select Calibrate Lock. Close the door fully before starting. The lock will extend and retract the bolt several times to learn the throw distance. Stand near the door during calibration to listen — if you hear the motor straining at a specific point, that indicates a physical obstruction the bolt is hitting. Resolve the obstruction and recalibrate.

Quick Solutions

Realign strike plate
Close door fully
Replace batteries
Tighten mounting screws
Update firmware
Retry calibration

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Align the strike plate before running calibration for the smoothest setup.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
