Problem Description

Your SimpliSafe smart lock shows Not Responding in the app, will not lock or unlock via the app, or physically jams when trying to turn the deadbolt. The smart lock communicates with the base station via RF similar to sensors. When it shows not responding the lock loses integration with the alarm system meaning it will not auto-lock when you arm or unlock when you disarm. Physical jamming occurs when the deadbolt is misaligned with the strike plate or the lock mechanism is binding. Both issues prevent reliable door security.

Symptoms

  • App shows smart lock not responding
  • Lock does not auto-lock when system arms
  • Cannot unlock via app or keypad
  • Lock physically jams when turning manually
  • Lock buzzes but deadbolt does not extend
  • Lock worked after installation but stopped responding
  • Exterior keypad works but app does not

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Smart lock too far from base station
  • Lock batteries are low or dead
  • Deadbolt misaligned with strike plate
  • Door warped or shifted causing binding
  • Lock installed with incorrect orientation
  • RF interference blocking communication with base station
  • Lock firmware needs update
  • Lock was not re-paired after base station reset

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not force a jammed smart lock as this can strip the motor gears. If the deadbolt will not extend or retract manually disengage the SimpliSafe lock by removing batteries and use the physical key to operate the deadbolt until the alignment issue is resolved. A forced lock may require replacement.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Replace Lock Batteries

The smart lock uses 4 AA batteries. Low batteries cause the lock to stop responding to RF commands while the keypad may still work. Remove the interior lock cover by sliding it up. Replace all 4 batteries with fresh alkaline or lithium AA batteries. After replacing batteries the lock should beep and reconnect to the base station within a few minutes. Check the app to see if the not responding status clears.

Check Physical Deadbolt Alignment

If the lock buzzes but the deadbolt does not extend the door or strike plate is misaligned. Open the door and try extending the deadbolt. If it extends freely when the door is open but not when closed the strike plate needs adjustment. Use a file to enlarge the strike plate hole or loosen the screws and shift the plate. The deadbolt should extend and retract smoothly with the door closed.

3

Recalibrate the Lock

After adjusting alignment recalibrate the lock. On the interior side of the lock press and hold the SimpliSafe button for 3 seconds until you hear a beep. The lock will auto-calibrate by extending and retracting the deadbolt several times. This teaches the lock the correct positions. If calibration fails repeatedly the door alignment still needs adjustment.

4

Re-pair the Lock to Base Station

If the lock shows not responding after checking batteries re-pair it to the system. In the app go to My System then Device Settings then select the smart lock and tap Remove Device. Then go to Add Device and select Smart Lock. Follow the prompts and press the pairing button on the lock when instructed. The base station will announce Smart Lock when pairing succeeds.

5

Check Base Station Distance

The smart lock needs to be within RF range of the base station. Thick walls, metal doors, and distance reduce signal strength. If the lock is far from the base station or separated by multiple walls consider moving the base station closer. Test communication by putting the system in test mode and using the lock. The base station should announce Smart Lock activity.

Quick Solutions

Replace the lock batteries with fresh AA batteries
Move the base station closer to the lock
Adjust the strike plate for proper deadbolt alignment
Re-pair the lock to the base station
Recalibrate the lock after installation adjustments
Check door alignment and adjust hinges if needed

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Smart locks are more susceptible to RF issues than sensors because they have motors that draw significant power. If your lock works via the physical keypad but not the app the issue is RF communication not the lock mechanism. Focus on base station distance and interference for not responding issues.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
