- Power adapter disconnected or faulty
- Backup battery fully depleted
- Power outlet not providing electricity
Problem Description
Your SimpliSafe base station, keypad, or sensors won't turn on or respond. The system may show no lights, fail to arm or disarm, or appear completely dead. Most SimpliSafe power issues are caused by battery depletion, power adapter problems, or firmware that needs a hard reset.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
A base station, keypad, or sensor that won't power on is a power problem specific to each: the base runs on its adapter with a backup battery, the keypad on AA cells, and sensors on coin/AA cells. Identify which device is dead.
Start by confirming the base's power adapter is connected to a live (non-switched) outlet and seated, and that its backup battery isn't the only thing running (it drains if mains is lost). For the keypad and sensors, replace their batteries. A base that won't power on with a known-good adapter needs SimpliSafe support.
Symptoms
- Base station shows no lights or display
- Keypad screen is blank and unresponsive
- System won't arm or disarm from any device
- Sensors show offline in SimpliSafe app
- Backup battery drained during power outage
- System beeps but doesn't respond to commands
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Power adapter disconnected or faulty
- Backup battery fully depleted
- Power outlet not providing electricity
- Firmware crash requiring hard reset
- Keypad batteries dead or corroded
- Base station overheated and shut down
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Never open the SimpliSafe base station yourself. There are no user-serviceable parts inside and opening it voids the warranty. Contact SimpliSafe support for any hardware issues.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Check Power Connection
Verify the power adapter is firmly plugged into both the wall outlet and the base station. The connection at the base station can work loose over time. Unplug and firmly replug both ends. Test the outlet by plugging in a lamp or phone charger to confirm it has power. If using a power strip, try plugging directly into a wall outlet instead.
Inspect Backup Battery
The SimpliSafe base station has an internal backup battery that keeps the system running during power outages. If this battery is fully depleted, the system may not turn on even with AC power until it charges. Leave the base station plugged in for at least 30 minutes before attempting to use it. The battery indicator in the app shows charge level.
Replace Keypad Batteries
If only the keypad is unresponsive, the batteries may be dead. Remove the keypad from its mount and open the battery compartment on the back. Remove the old batteries and check for corrosion. Insert 4 fresh AA batteries following the polarity markings. Remount the keypad and wait 30 seconds for it to reconnect to the base station.
Perform Hard Reset
If the base station has power but won't respond, perform a hard reset. Unplug the power adapter from the base station. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in. The base station will take 2-3 minutes to fully boot and reconnect to SimpliSafe servers. Do not interrupt this process. The SimpliSafe logo will appear when ready.
Check SimpliSafe App Status
Open the SimpliSafe app and check your system status. If the base station shows offline, it may still be connecting. Wait 5 minutes after power restoration. If sensors show offline, they will automatically reconnect within 15 minutes. If problems persist after 30 minutes of being plugged in, contact SimpliSafe support for hardware diagnosis.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
SimpliSafe backup batteries last 3-5 years. If your system is older and frequently loses power during outages, the backup battery may need replacement. SimpliSafe support can help diagnose battery health remotely.
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
