Problem Description

The ECOVACS Home app shows Error 109 (Main Brush is tangled). The main roller brush in the cage on the underside is wound with hair or bound by debris and can't turn, so Deebot stops to protect the brush motor.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Error 109 is the main brush binding up - the long roller in the center cage that does most of the actual sweeping. Because it turns at speed against the floor, long hair winds around it and packs into the end caps until the brush motor stalls and Deebot stops to avoid damage. Pet and long-hair households hit this most.

Pop off the brush guard, lift out the roller, and slice the wound hair off along its length, then clear the removable bearing cap where hair hides. Reseat the brush the correct way round and clip the guard back down. If the bristles are splayed, replace the brush - it is cheap. A clean, seated brush that still won't spin means the brush motor is failing and needs Ecovacs service.

Symptoms

  • ECOVACS Home app shows Error 109
  • Voice says the main brush is tangled
  • Main roller brush not spinning
  • Thick hair wrapped around the roller
  • Poor pickup after the error
  • Robot stops soon after starting
  • Grinding from the center underside
  • Error 109 repeats each clean

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Hair wound tightly around the main brush
  • String or cord wrapped on the roller
  • Debris packed in the brush end caps
  • Main brush not seated in its bearings
  • Brush guard clogged with hair
  • Worn brush bristles needing replacement
  • Sticky residue binding the roller
  • Brush motor obstructed

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

If a clean, correctly seated main brush still won't spin, the brush motor may be failing - contact Ecovacs rather than forcing repeated runs.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Open the Brush Cage

Flip Deebot over. The main brush is the long roller in the cage across the center of the underside. Squeeze the tabs on the brush guard (the frame over the roller) and lift it off to expose the brush.

2

Lift Out the Main Brush

Pull the main brush straight up out of its cradle. One end has a fixed pin and the other a removable bearing cap - note which way it sits so you can refit it the same way.

3

Cut Away Wound Hair

Hair wraps tightly along the roller and packs into the grooves. Use the cleaning tool's blade or scissors to slice along the brush, then peel the hair off in strips.

4

Clear the End Caps

Pull the bearing cap off the removable end and dig out the hair and dust packed inside it. Clogged end caps are a top cause of a brush that binds and won't spin.

5

Clean the Brush Guard

Pick hair and debris out of the brush guard frame and the cage before refitting, so nothing re-tangles the roller immediately.

6

Reseat the Brush

Drop the main brush back in with the fixed pin on the correct side, refit the bearing cap, then clip the brush guard back down until it locks. A brush that isn't fully seated jams and re-triggers Error 109.

7

Replace a Worn Brush

If the bristles are splayed, flattened, or thin, pickup suffers and the brush binds more easily. Swap in a genuine Ecovacs main brush - it is an inexpensive wear part.

8

Restart and Watch

Press AUTO and confirm the main brush spins. If a clean, correctly seated brush still won't turn, the brush motor is obstructed or failing - contact Ecovacs.

Quick Solutions

Open the brush guard and lift out the main brush
Cut and pull hair off the roller
Clear debris from both brush end caps
Reseat the brush fully in its bearings
Clean hair out of the brush guard
Replace a worn main brush
Wipe sticky residue off the roller
Restart and confirm the brush spins

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Don't forget the end caps - hair packed inside the removable bearing cap is the most-missed cause of a main brush that keeps re-jamming.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
