- Weak WiFi signal at camera location
- Power supply interrupted or adapter failing
- Motion sensitivity set too low or too high
Problem Description
You want to set up continuous recording on your Wyze Cam so it records 24/7 to a microSD card. Insert a microSD card into the slot on the bottom of the Wyze Cam (up to 256GB supported). In the Wyze app, go to the camera settings > Advanced Settings > Local Storage and select Continuous Recording. The camera will record non-stop to the card, overwriting the oldest footage when the card is full.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Wyze does not offer continuous recording to the cloud — it would cost them a fortune in bandwidth and storage. Continuous recording only works with a microSD card physically inside the camera. Format the card through the Wyze app camera settings, not on your computer, because the app formats it to the right filesystem. Cards up to 32GB use FAT32 and hold about 2 to 3 days of continuous HD footage. Cards 64GB and larger use exFAT and get you a week or more. The most common mistake is buying a card, sticking it in, and assuming recording starts automatically. You have to enable continuous recording in the camera settings.
Symptoms
- Camera shows offline in the app
- Live view fails to load or times out
- Motion detection not triggering alerts
- Night vision appears too dark or washed out
- Recorded clips are missing or corrupted
- Two-way audio not working
- Camera keeps disconnecting from WiFi
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Weak WiFi signal at camera location
- Power supply interrupted or adapter failing
- Motion sensitivity set too low or too high
- Cloud storage subscription expired
- Camera firmware outdated
- Infrared sensors blocked or dirty
- Bandwidth insufficient for multiple cameras
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Solution
Insert a microSD card
Continuous recording on Wyze cameras requires a microSD card inserted into the camera — it does not record continuously to the cloud. Use a Class 10 or UHS-1 card, 32GB minimum. The camera supports up to 256GB. Insert the card into the slot (usually on the bottom or back of the camera). The camera will automatically format the card if needed. High-endurance cards last longer than standard cards because continuous recording writes constantly.
Enable continuous recording in the Wyze app
Open the Wyze app, select the camera, tap Settings (gear icon), then Advanced Settings, then Local Storage. Select Continuous Recording. The camera now records 24/7 to the microSD card, overwriting the oldest footage when the card is full. A 32GB card holds about 2-3 days at HD quality. A 256GB card holds about 3 weeks.
Choose between continuous and event-only recording
Wyze offers two local recording modes: Continuous (24/7 recording) and Events Only (records only when motion is detected). Continuous uses more storage but never misses anything. Events Only saves space but may miss events if motion detection does not trigger. For security-critical cameras (front door, driveway), continuous is recommended. For low-priority cameras, events only is sufficient.
Access recorded footage
To view continuous recordings, open the camera live view in the Wyze app and tap the Playback button (timeline icon). A timeline slider appears at the bottom. Drag it to any time to view that recording. Green sections indicate footage is available. Gaps indicate the camera was offline or the card was not recording. You can scrub through hours of footage quickly.
Monitor microSD card health
Continuous recording puts heavy write stress on microSD cards. Consumer-grade cards can fail within 6-12 months of continuous use. High-endurance cards (Samsung High Endurance, SanDisk High Endurance) are designed for this and last 2-3 years. If playback shows corruption, choppy video, or gaps, the card is likely failing. Replace it and format the new card in the camera, not on a computer.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Set up activity zones to monitor only the areas that matter like your front porch and driveway and exclude the street. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss an actual event at your property.
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
