Problem Description

Your Kasa smart plug randomly disconnects from WiFi and shows offline in the Kasa app. It might work fine for hours or days then suddenly go offline. You notice because a scheduled automation does not run, or you try to turn something on from your phone and it fails. Sometimes it reconnects on its own, other times you have to unplug it and plug it back in. This is incredibly frustrating because the whole point of a smart plug is reliability. The disconnections are usually caused by WiFi interference, router settings, or the plug losing its IP address.

Symptoms

  • Kasa app shows plug offline then it comes back hours later
  • Scheduled automations fail because plug was disconnected
  • Alexa says device is not responding when plug is offline
  • Plug works for days then goes offline repeatedly in one day
  • Have to physically unplug and replug to get it back online
  • Multiple Kasa plugs go offline at the same time

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi signal weak at the outlet where plug is installed
  • Router DHCP lease expired and assigned different IP
  • Router disconnects idle devices to save power
  • 2.4GHz WiFi channel congested with neighbor networks
  • Too many devices on network overwhelming router capacity
  • Kasa plug firmware has bug causing random disconnects

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not plug a Kasa smart plug into a power strip or extension cord. This can cause power fluctuations that make the plug reset or disconnect. Plug it directly into a wall outlet.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check WiFi Signal at Plug Location

Open the Kasa app, tap the plug, then tap the gear icon for settings. Look for Device Info or Network Info. Check the WiFi signal strength or RSSI value. If signal is weak or shows one bar the connection will be unstable. Kasa plugs have small antennas and weaker WiFi than your phone. Even if your phone has good signal at that outlet the plug might not. Try moving the plug to an outlet closer to your router, or add a WiFi range extender near problem plugs.

2

Create DHCP Reservation for the Plug

When your router DHCP lease expires it may assign a different IP address to the plug causing a temporary disconnect. Log into your router admin panel usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Find DHCP settings then look for DHCP reservation or static DHCP. Find your Kasa plug in the connected devices list by name or MAC address. Create a reservation giving it a permanent IP. This prevents IP address changes from disconnecting the plug.

3

Disable Router Power Saving Features

Many routers disconnect WiFi devices that have been idle to save power or free up connections. Smart plugs can be idle for long periods when nothing is scheduled. Log into your router and search for settings like WiFi power save, green mode, idle client timeout, or inactive device disconnect. Disable these settings. On mesh routers like Eero or Google WiFi check the app for eco mode or power saving options and disable them.

4

Change Your Router 2.4GHz Channel

Kasa plugs only use 2.4GHz WiFi which is crowded in apartments and neighborhoods. Your neighbors routers cause interference that makes your plug disconnect. Log into your router and go to wireless settings. Change the 2.4GHz channel to 1, 6, or 11 whichever is least used by neighbors. Use a WiFi analyzer app on your phone to see which channels are congested. After changing wait a few minutes for the plug to reconnect on the new channel.

5

Update Plug Firmware

TP-Link releases firmware updates that fix WiFi stability bugs. Open the Kasa app and tap your plug then the gear icon. Look for Firmware or Device Info then Check for Update. If an update is available install it. The plug will reboot during the update and be offline briefly. After updating monitor the plug for a few days to see if disconnections continue. If problems persist after updating, factory reset the plug and set it up fresh.

Quick Solutions

Move plug closer to router or add WiFi extender
Set DHCP reservation for plug in router settings
Disable router power saving and idle timeout features
Change router 2.4GHz channel to 1, 6, or 11
Reboot router to clear connection table
Update plug firmware through Kasa app

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.

Pro Tip

If you have many Kasa devices and they all go offline together, the problem is your router not the plugs. Check if your router is overloaded or needs a reboot. Some consumer routers struggle with more than 20-30 WiFi devices.

Real-World Insight

Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • WiFi signal weak at the outlet where plug is
  • Router DHCP lease expired and assigned different IP
  • Router disconnects idle devices to save power
  • 2.4GHz WiFi channel congested with neighbor networks
  • Too many devices on network overwhelming router capacity
