Overview
Kasa Smart Kasa Smart Switch setup takes under 15 minutes for most users — if you're stuck, the steps below target the specific points where installs stall.
This guide covers the in-wall installation of the TP-Link Kasa Smart Switch, including safe wiring to your existing light circuit, neutral wire connection, and Kasa app setup for remote control, scheduling, and Alexa or Google Home integration. Kasa Smart Switches require a neutral wire and replace single-pole switches controlling non-dimmable lights or ceiling fans.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Installing a Kasa in-wall smart switch is a wiring job plus a WiFi onboarding, and the wiring has one non-negotiable: it requires a neutral wire, since the switch's WiFi electronics need constant power. You'll connect line (incoming power), load (to the light), neutral, and ground.
Turn off the breaker, identify line versus load (a tester helps), and wire line, load, neutral, and ground per the diagram, then restore power. Add the switch in the Kasa app on a 2.4GHz network (it won't join 5GHz) with your phone nearby, and install any firmware. If your box has no neutral, a standard Kasa switch won't work — you'd need a no-neutral-capable switch instead.

Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.
Before You Start
- Neutral wire required and missing
- Line/load misidentified
- Connecting to 5GHz not 2.4GHz
- Weak 2.4GHz at the switch
- Switch not in pairing mode
- Wrong WiFi password
- Air-gap/breaker issue
- Firmware update pending
Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do
ELECTRICAL WORK RISK: Turn off power at breaker and verify with voltage tester. If unsure about wiring, consult licensed electrician.

Installation Steps
Turn Off Power at the Circuit Breaker
Before touching any wiring, locate the circuit breaker controlling the light switch you are replacing and switch it off. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the existing switch wires to confirm power is off before proceeding. Smart switch installations require working with line voltage — never skip this step. Confirm the tester shows no voltage on all wires before removing the existing switch.
Remove the Existing Switch and Document the Wiring
Unscrew the existing switch cover plate and wall box screws. Pull the switch out from the wall and photograph the wiring before disconnecting anything. Kasa Smart Switches require a neutral wire — a white wire connected to the neutral bundle in the wall box. If all wires at the existing switch are black or if there is no white wire connected, consult an electrician before proceeding as neutral may not be available in older wiring.
Connect the Kasa Smart Switch Wires
Connect the line hot wire (black wire from the breaker side) to the black wire on the Kasa switch. Connect the load wire (black wire going to the light fixture) to the red wire on the Kasa switch. Connect the neutral wire (white wire) to the white wire on the Kasa switch. Connect the ground wire (bare copper or green) to the green wire on the Kasa switch. Secure all connections with the included wire nuts and tug each connection gently to confirm it is seated.
Mount the Switch and Restore Power
Carefully fold the wires into the wall box and screw the Kasa switch into place. Attach the cover plate. Restore power at the circuit breaker. The Kasa switch LED should illuminate and the switch should enter setup mode — indicated by a slow blinking LED. If the LED does not light, turn off the breaker and recheck all wire connections for a loose or missing neutral.
Add the Switch in the Kasa Smart App
Download the Kasa Smart app and sign in or create a TP-Link account. Make sure your phone is on your 2.4GHz WiFi network. Tap the plus icon then Add Device and select Switch from the categories. The app will automatically detect the switch in pairing mode. Follow the prompts to connect it to your WiFi network. After successful connection, name the switch by the light it controls — Kitchen Lights or Entryway — and enable Alexa or Google Home integration for voice control.
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
