- Google Home app needs refresh or has cached bad state
- Device on different subnet than Google Home speakers
- Thread device too far from Nest Hub acting as border router
Problem Description
You paired a Matter device to Google Home and it shows in the app, but it does not actually work. Tapping on it does nothing, voice commands are ignored, or the status never updates. The device might work perfectly in its manufacturer app or in Apple HomeKit, but Google Home cannot control it. You see the device in your Google Home room list but it is basically a ghost that does nothing. This happens because Matter pairing succeeded but the ongoing communication failed. Common causes are network issues, Google Home app bugs, or Thread routing problems.
Symptoms
- Device appears in Google Home but tapping does nothing
- Google Assistant says ok but device does not respond
- Device status in Google Home never updates from unknown
- Works in manufacturer app but not through Google Home
- Device shows in room list but controls are grayed out
- Automations including device fail to execute
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Google Home app needs refresh or has cached bad state
- Device on different subnet than Google Home speakers
- Thread device too far from Nest Hub acting as border router
- Google Home app not updated to latest version
- Device firmware not fully Matter compatible
- Matter pairing partially completed but not fully
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Some older Nest devices do not support Thread border router functionality even after updates. Nest Hub 1st gen cannot act as a Thread border router. Only 2nd gen and newer Nest Hub devices work.

Step-by-Step Solution
Force Refresh Google Home App
The Google Home app sometimes caches incorrect device states. Force close the app completely. On Android go to Settings then Apps then Google Home then Force Stop. On iPhone swipe up to close the app. Wait 10 seconds then reopen Google Home. Pull down on the home screen to force a refresh of all devices. Check if the device now responds to taps. Sometimes this simple refresh fixes communication that was stuck.
Verify Network Configuration
Matter devices must be on the same network subnet as your Google Home speakers and displays. If you have a complex network with VLANs, guest networks, or multiple routers, devices may not be able to communicate. Log into your router and check that the Matter device and your Nest speakers have IP addresses in the same range like 192.168.1.x. If they are on different subnets you need to bridge them or move devices to the same network.
Check Thread Border Router Position
If your Matter device uses Thread it communicates through a Thread border router. Nest Hub 2nd gen, Nest Hub Max, and Nest Wifi Pro can act as Thread border routers. Make sure one of these is reasonably close to your Thread devices. Thread range is about 30-50 feet through walls but can be much less through concrete or metal. If your Thread devices are far from any border router they may pair but fail to communicate reliably.
Update Everything
Matter is still being refined and updates often fix compatibility issues. Update the Google Home app from the Play Store or App Store. Update your Nest speakers and displays through the Google Home app device settings. Update the Matter device through its manufacturer app. Sometimes a device ships with Matter partially implemented and needs a firmware update to work properly with Google Home.
Remove and Re-Add With Fresh Pairing
If the device still does not work after other steps, remove it and start fresh. In Google Home tap the device then the gear icon then Remove Device. Confirm removal. Factory reset the Matter device following manufacturer instructions. Put it in pairing mode and add it to Google Home again using Add then Matter or Set Up Device. A completely fresh pairing often resolves stuck states that cannot be fixed otherwise.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If voice commands stopped working after relinking the account, check that the skill or action is still enabled — relinking sometimes disables it silently.
Google Home can take up to 30 seconds to sync state with Matter devices. If you just changed something in the manufacturer app wait a bit before checking Google Home.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Google Home app needs refresh or has cached bad
- Device on different subnet than Google Home speakers
- Thread device too far from Nest Hub acting as
- Google Home app not updated to latest version
- Device firmware not fully Matter compatible
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
