- Firmware download interrupted by an internet drop
- Power lost during the firmware write, corrupting the update
- DNS filtering or router firewall blocked the update servers
Problem Description
Your SmartThings hub started a firmware update and never finished. The hub LED is flashing or solid in an unusual color, the SmartThings app shows the hub as offline or stuck on updating, and all your smart home devices are unresponsive. You may have lost power during the update, or the update failed during download. Your Zigbee and Z-Wave devices are still physically working but the hub cannot communicate with them or with the SmartThings cloud. Some users report the hub is completely bricked — no LED activity and no network response.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
SmartThings hub firmware updates fail more often than Samsung admits. The hub has to download the update from Samsung cloud servers, verify it, and flash it to internal storage — and any hiccup in that chain can leave you with a paperweight. The most common cause is network-related: DNS filtering services like Pi-hole block Samsung endpoints, router threat protection flags the download, or the internet drops during the write phase. Connecting the hub directly to the router on ethernet with all filtering disabled fixes most update failures. But if you lost power during the flash — that is a different story. The firmware gets corrupted mid-write and no amount of resetting can fix it. Samsung support will replace it under warranty but if you are out of warranty you are buying a new hub.
Symptoms
- Hub LED flashing an unusual pattern during the update
- App shows the hub offline or stuck updating for hours
- All Zigbee and Z-Wave devices unresponsive through the app
- Firmware update running over an hour with no progress
- No LED activity at all after a failed update
- Hub's IP not showing in the network device list
- Hub reboots repeatedly during the update
- Devices show offline while the hub is stuck updating
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Firmware download interrupted by an internet drop
- Power lost during the firmware write, corrupting the update
- DNS filtering or router firewall blocked the update servers
- Router threat-protection features blocked update endpoints
- Hub storage full or corrupted, preventing the write
- Double NAT or strict router config blocking cloud comms
- WiFi link too weak to complete the download
- Update stalled mid-write and needs a retry
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Factory reset deletes all paired devices and automations. You will need to re-pair every Zigbee and Z-Wave device individually which can take hours for a large setup.

Step-by-Step Solution
Power cycle and wait for update retry
Unplug the SmartThings hub from power and disconnect the ethernet cable. Wait 60 seconds. Plug the ethernet cable back in directly to your main router — not a switch, not a mesh satellite, directly into the primary router. Then plug in power. The hub will boot and automatically attempt the firmware update again. Give it at least 30 minutes without interrupting it. The LED will cycle through colors during the update process. Do not unplug it during this time even if it looks stuck. Some updates take up to an hour depending on your internet speed.

$9.99Bypass network security features
SmartThings firmware updates connect to multiple Samsung cloud endpoints on various ports. If your router has DNS filtering like Pi-hole or NextDNS, or threat protection features like those on ASUS routers, these can silently block the update download. Temporarily disable all DNS filtering, ad blocking, firewall rules, and security features on your router. Also disable any VPN on the network. The hub needs unrestricted internet access to download and verify the firmware package. Re-enable your security features after the update completes.
Perform a soft reset
If the hub is responsive but stuck, perform a soft reset. Find the small reset hole on the back of the hub. Use a paperclip and press the reset button. Hold it for about 15 seconds until the LED flashes yellow. Release and wait. A soft reset restarts the hub firmware without removing your paired devices or automations. The hub will reboot and attempt to reconnect to the SmartThings cloud. After reconnecting, it should pick up the firmware update from where it left off or start fresh.
Factory reset as last resort
If the soft reset did not work and the hub is stuck in a boot loop or unresponsive, try a full factory reset. Unplug the hub from power. Hold the reset button with a paperclip while plugging in power. Keep holding for about 30 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly. Release the button. This wipes the hub completely — all paired devices, automations, and settings are gone. You will need to re-add the hub to your SmartThings account and re-pair every device from scratch. This is a last resort before contacting Samsung support.
Contact Samsung support for bricked hubs
If the hub shows no LED activity at all and does not respond to any reset procedure, the firmware may be corrupted beyond recovery. Contact Samsung SmartThings support with your hub model number and serial number. If the hub is still under warranty, Samsung will replace it. If it is out of warranty, they may offer a discount on a replacement hub. Before contacting support, note your hub model (V2 is STH-ETH-250, V3 is IM6001-V3P), firmware version if known, and what happened before it failed.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the hub reconnects then drops every few minutes, check for an IP conflict — two devices sharing the same DHCP address fight each other continuously.
Never unplug a SmartThings hub during a firmware update. Even if it looks stuck for 30 minutes, wait. Interrupting the write phase can permanently brick the hub.
Firmware updates that wipe settings are more common than brands admit — many devices silently reset to factory defaults on an OTA push with no warning.
- Firmware download interrupted by an internet drop
- Power lost during the firmware write, corrupting the update
- DNS filtering or router firewall blocked the update servers
- Router threat-protection features blocked update endpoints
- Hub storage full or corrupted, preventing the write
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
