Overview

You want to install Nanoleaf Lines on your wall to create a geometric backlit light bar design. Unlike Shapes panels, Lines mount on connector backplates that hold each bar at 60-degree angles creating a modular web pattern. This guide covers planning your layout, mounting backplates, snapping in the light bars, and pairing with the Nanoleaf app.

What's Included

  • Illuminated light bar segments with backlit LED design
  • Connector backplates that mount to the wall as hubs
  • Snap-fit caps that hold bars to backplates at 60-degree angles
  • Controller backplate with power input and Thread radio
  • Power supply unit with cable for controller connection
  • Mounting tape strips and layout planning template

Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.

Before You Start

  • Lines connect via backplates not directly to each other
  • Each backplate can hold up to three line bars at angles
  • Plan your pattern on the floor before wall mounting
  • Controller backplate must connect to power supply outlet
  • Use the Nanoleaf app Layout Assistant for pattern ideas
  • Clean wall surface with alcohol for strong tape adhesion

Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do

Warning

Do not mount Nanoleaf Lines on wallpaper or vinyl wall coverings. The mounting tape adhesive bonds to the wallpaper surface not the wall beneath it and the weight of the bars will eventually peel the wallpaper away.

Installation Steps

1

Design Your Layout

Lay all line bars and connector backplates on the floor to create your desired pattern. Each backplate acts as a junction hub that can hold up to three line bars radiating outward at 60-degree angles. The controller backplate must be included in the layout and positioned where the power cable can reach an outlet. Use the included planning template or the Nanoleaf app Layout Assistant to try different geometric patterns before committing.

2

Prepare the Wall

Clean the wall surface where backplates will be mounted using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. The mounting tape bonds best on smooth flat painted drywall. Avoid textured walls or surfaces painted within the last 30 days. Mark the position of your first controller backplate lightly with a pencil. Use a level to ensure the mark is straight. Let the cleaned surface dry completely for two minutes before applying any tape.

Mount Controller Backplate

Peel the adhesive backing from two mounting tape strips and apply them to the back of the controller backplate. Align the backplate with your pencil mark on the wall. Press firmly against the wall for 30 seconds applying even pressure. This is the anchor point for your entire layout. Connect the power supply cable to the controller port before mounting if the port will be hard to access once the backplate is on the wall.

4

Add Backplates and Snap In Bars

Mount the next connector backplate at the correct distance and angle from the controller. The line bars are a fixed length so the backplate spacing is determined by the bar length. Apply tape and press for 30 seconds. Take a line bar and snap one end into a cap on the controller backplate and the other end into a cap on the new backplate. You should hear a click at each end. Continue mounting backplates and snapping in bars one section at a time.

5

Power On and Connect App

Plug the power supply into the controller backplate and then into a wall outlet. All line bars should illuminate confirming every connection is solid. If any bar stays dark remove and reseat it in its backplate caps. Open the Nanoleaf app and tap add device. The app will find the controller via Bluetooth and connect it to your WiFi or Thread network. Once paired browse scenes adjust colors per segment and enable music visualization.

Installation Tips

Mount controller backplate first near your power outlet
Press each backplate firmly for 30 seconds on the wall
Snap line bars gently into backplate caps until they click
Use a level on the first backplate for straight alignment
Add one backplate and its bars at a time checking angles
Bars can be removed and rearranged without damaging them

Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Pro Tip

When removing a line bar from a backplate cap pull straight outward from the cap rather than twisting. Twisting can bend the internal contact pins inside the cap and cause intermittent connection issues with that port.
