Overview
You purchased a Nanoleaf Essentials A19 smart bulb and want to screw it in and connect it to your smart home. Unlike traditional Nanoleaf panels this is a standard screw-in bulb that connects via Thread or Bluetooth. This guide covers installation in your fixture, pairing with the Nanoleaf app, and connecting to Apple Home or Google Home.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
The Nanoleaf Essentials A19 is a Thread- and Matter-capable smart bulb that also pairs over Bluetooth — so you add it over Bluetooth up close, and for remote control and a robust connection it joins a Thread network via a border router. Like any smart bulb, it needs constant power, so leave the wall switch on and control it in the app.
Screw in the bulb, leave the wall switch on, and pair it over Bluetooth with your phone close (power-cycle it into pairing mode if needed), scanning the Matter/HomeKit setup code. For remote access and Thread, make sure you have a border router / Matter controller (a HomePod, Apple TV, Nest, or Echo hub). Install any firmware, and control color and white tone in the Nanoleaf app or your Matter ecosystem.

Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do
Do not use Nanoleaf Essentials bulbs with traditional dimmer switches or smart dimmer switches. The voltage modulation from dimmers causes flickering and can damage the internal LED driver circuit permanently.
Tools & Requirements
Installation Steps
Turn Off the Light Switch
Flip the wall switch or lamp switch to the off position for the fixture where you will install the bulb. If replacing an existing bulb wait 30 seconds for it to cool down before handling. For ceiling fixtures you may need a step ladder. Unscrew and remove the old bulb and set it aside for proper disposal.
Install the Bulb
Take the Nanoleaf Essentials A19 bulb and align the E26 screw base with the socket in your fixture. Turn the bulb clockwise by hand until it is snug in the socket. Do not overtighten as this can damage the socket contacts or the bulb base. The A19 form factor fits standard table lamps floor lamps and most ceiling fixtures with E26 sockets.
Power On the Bulb
Turn the light switch back on. The Nanoleaf Essentials bulb will illuminate in a default warm white color indicating it is powered and ready for pairing. If the bulb does not light up turn the switch off and verify the bulb is fully screwed in. Leave the switch in the on position permanently after this point. All brightness and color control will be done through the app.
Pair with Nanoleaf App
Open the Nanoleaf app and tap the plus icon to add a new device. Select Essentials Bulb from the product list. The app will search for the bulb via Bluetooth. When it appears tap to connect. Follow the on-screen steps to name the bulb and assign it to a room. If you have a Thread border router like an Apple HomePod Mini the bulb will automatically join your Thread mesh network for faster and more reliable control.
Connect to Smart Home Platform
The Nanoleaf Essentials bulb works with Apple HomeKit Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. For HomeKit scan the QR code printed on the bulb or its packaging using the Apple Home app. For Google Home link your Nanoleaf account in the Google Home app. Once connected you can use Siri Hey Google or Alexa voice commands to control the bulb brightness color and on-off state.
Installation Tips
Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If you have multiple Essentials bulbs in the same room add them all to one room group in the Nanoleaf app first then link that room to your voice assistant. This lets you say turn on the bedroom lights to control all bulbs at once.
