Problem Description

You are setting up the Nanoleaf Skylight ceiling-mounted light panels. Plan the ceiling layout and power location before mounting — the panels mount flat to the ceiling and require an electrical junction box for power. Each panel connects to the next via linkers. This guide covers ceiling layout planning, electrical connection, and app configuration.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The Nanoleaf Skylight is a ceiling-mounted, modular light that replaces a hardwired fixture — so unlike the plug-in panels, it's a wired installation to mains power (line, neutral, ground) with the breaker off, not an adhesive-and-adapter job. After the physical install, the controller pairs to 2.4GHz WiFi.

Turn off the breaker, hardwire the Skylight to your ceiling box (line, neutral, ground) and connect the modules per your layout, then restore power. Put the controller in pairing mode and connect to a 2.4GHz network with your phone nearby, ensuring the ceiling location has decent 2.4GHz coverage. Install any firmware. Because it's mains wiring, have an electrician handle or verify the connections if you're not confident.

Symptoms

  • Setting up the Skylight
  • Hardwiring/installation questions
  • Won't power on
  • Modular layout questions
  • Won't connect to WiFi
  • Controller/app pairing
  • Offline after install
  • Dimming/scene questions

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Hardwiring not done correctly (mains)
  • Breaker off / no power to the fixture
  • Modules not connected properly
  • Connecting to 5GHz not 2.4GHz
  • Controller not in pairing mode
  • Weak WiFi at the ceiling location
  • Firmware update pending
  • Wrong wiring (line/neutral/ground)

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not attempt to open or modify the light hardware. Smart lights contain electronic components that can be damaged by moisture or physical tampering. Always power off at the wall switch before removing or repositioning a smart light.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Plan the ceiling layout and power location

Nanoleaf Skylight panels mount flush to the ceiling and connect together in a modular grid. The main controller panel is hardwired to your ceiling electrical — all other panels connect to the controller via power and data cables. Plan which ceiling junction box will power the controller and how the remaining panels will chain from it. You can connect up to 99 expansion panels to one controller.

2

Turn off the breaker and wire the controller panel

Cut power at the circuit breaker for the ceiling light circuit. Remove the existing ceiling fixture. Wire the Skylight controller panel to the ceiling box: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), green or bare copper to ground. Use the included wire connectors. The controller panel is the only panel that connects directly to household wiring — all expansion panels draw power through the controller.

3

Mount the panels to the ceiling

Mark the screw hole positions using the panel as a template. Drill pilot holes and insert the included drywall anchors. Screw the panel mounting plates to the ceiling, then snap the panels onto the plates. Connect expansion panels to the controller using the included power and data cables that run between panels. The panels sit flush against the ceiling for a clean, integrated look.

4

Pair with the Nanoleaf app

Restore power at the breaker. The Skylight controller lights up and enters pairing mode. Open the Nanoleaf app, tap +, and select Skylight. Scan the pairing code on the controller. The app connects over WiFi (2.4GHz) and adds the Skylight to the light list. Assign it to a room and configure your preferred default brightness and color temperature.

5

Do not use with a wall dimmer switch

The Skylight must be on a standard on/off switch or always-on power. Traditional wall dimmers chop the AC power, which damages the Skylight controller electronics and causes flickering. Dimming is done through the app, voice assistants, or Nanoleaf scenes. If your wall switch is a dimmer, replace it with a standard toggle or on/off switch before installing the Skylight.

Quick Solutions

Hardwire to mains correctly (line/neutral/ground)
Restore the breaker after wiring
Connect the modules per the layout
Connect to a 2.4GHz WiFi network
Put the controller in pairing mode
Ensure 2.4GHz reaches the ceiling
Install any firmware update
Have an electrician verify the wiring if unsure

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If flickering only happens on dimming, the issue is almost always the dimmer's minimum-load setting, not the bulb — it's drawing less current than the dimmer expects.

Pro Tip

Group your smart lights by room in the app and assign clear names like Kitchen Ceiling and Bedroom Lamp. This makes voice commands more reliable and lets you create scenes that control multiple lights at once with a single command.

Real-World Insight

Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Hardwiring not done correctly (mains)
  • Breaker off / no power to the fixture
  • Modules not connected properly
  • Connecting to 5GHz not 2.4GHz
  • Controller not in pairing mode
