- Re-key steps done out of order or a step skipped
- Started without a working/current key in the cylinder
- Wrong tool used (not the genuine SmartKey learn tool)
Problem Description
Your Kwikset SmartKey re-key process is failing. The lock may jam, refuse to turn with the SmartKey tool, or not accept the new key after the re-key procedure. SmartKey re-keying must follow a precise sequence — skipping steps or using the wrong tool can cause the lock to jam in a partially re-keyed state.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
SmartKey re-keying lets you change what key operates the lock in under a minute, but it's an exact sequence and any deviation can jam the cylinder in a half-re-keyed state. The procedure requires two things people skip: a current working key to start (you cannot re-key from a locked-out cylinder), and the genuine SmartKey learn tool, which must be inserted fully until it clicks. In short, you insert the working key and turn it as directed, seat the SmartKey tool until it clicks and remove it, remove the working key, fully insert the new key, rotate it the specified amount and back to the start position, then remove it - and the new key now operates the lock while the old one no longer does.
The failures almost all come from sequence and seating: a new key that wasn't pushed in all the way, a rotation done the wrong direction or amount, or the learn tool not clicking home. If the cylinder jams between keys, don't force it - Kwikset sells a SmartKey reset cradle that returns a jammed cylinder to a re-keyable state, and that's the correct recovery rather than prying. Use a properly cut original Kwikset blank, keep the keyway free of debris, and if a cylinder stays stuck after a reset attempt, it may be worn and need replacing.
Symptoms
- Lock jams partway through the re-key process
- SmartKey tool won't insert or won't click
- New key won't turn or won't operate the lock after re-keying
- Old key still works after re-keying
- Cylinder stuck between the working and new key
- Key won't come out during the procedure
- Re-key seemed to work but the lock now binds
- SmartKey tool feels loose in the hole
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Re-key steps done out of order or a step skipped
- Started without a working/current key in the cylinder
- Wrong tool used (not the genuine SmartKey learn tool)
- New key not fully inserted before rotating
- Key rotated the wrong amount or direction
- Cylinder already jammed from a prior failed attempt
- Debris or wear in the SmartKey cylinder
- Non-original or poorly-cut key blank
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution
Gather the correct tools
To re-key a Kwikset SmartKey lock, you need three things: the current working key (the key that currently opens the lock), the new key you want to use (must be a Kwikset KW1 keyway blank — other brands do not work), and the SmartKey tool (a small, flat metal tool included with the lock, also sold separately). Without the current working key, you cannot re-key — the lock must be in the unlocked position with the current key to start the process.
Follow the re-key steps in order
Insert the current working key into the lock and turn it 90 degrees clockwise (to the 3 oclock position). Leave the key in this position. Insert the SmartKey tool into the small hole next to the keyhole (above the keyhole on most models). Push the SmartKey tool in firmly until you feel a click — this releases the internal wafers. Remove the current key. Insert the new key. Turn the new key back 90 degrees counterclockwise to the vertical position. Remove the new key. The lock is now re-keyed.
Fix the SmartKey tool not clicking
If you insert the SmartKey tool but do not feel a click, the key may not be turned to exactly the right position. The key must be at exactly 90 degrees (horizontal). Try adjusting the key angle slightly. Also make sure you are using the correct SmartKey tool — Kwikset has used different tool sizes across lock generations. The tool should be a thin, flat piece about 2 inches long. Using the wrong tool or a makeshift substitute will not engage the internal mechanism.
Fix the new key not turning after re-keying
If you re-keyed but the new key does not turn the lock smoothly, the re-key process may not have completed correctly. The most common mistake is removing the SmartKey tool before removing the current key, or turning the new key in the wrong direction. Re-do the process from the beginning using the NEW key (which is now the current key) and try a different new key. If no key works at all after a failed re-key, the internal wafers may be jammed — you may need to take the lock to a locksmith or replace the cylinder.
Re-key both the deadbolt and the knob or lever to match
If you have both a Kwikset deadbolt and a Kwikset knob or lever on the same door, re-key both to the same new key. Re-key the deadbolt first, then use the same new key to re-key the knob or lever. After re-keying both, the same key opens both locks. This only works if both locks have the SmartKey feature — check for the SmartKey logo on the lock face. Non-SmartKey Kwikset locks cannot be re-keyed at home.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Re-key steps done out of order or a step
- Started without a working/current key in the cylinder
- Wrong tool used (not the genuine SmartKey learn tool)
- New key not fully inserted before rotating
- Key rotated the wrong amount or direction
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
